vin on 1965 mustang

My 1965 mustang has a VIN  production number of 749746.    That's way too high
of a
Production number given that only 550000 or
So mustangs were produced.  Any ideas?

That number is the sequential unit number of your car as it came off the assembly line. The car behind yours, which may have been a Falcon for example, would be 749747. The car in front of yours would be 749745. The unit numbers weren't broken down by model. There's also the possibility that the plant didn't start with 100001. HTH. -Jim
