why do the 88 honda accords engines reve so high when started and takes awhile to kick down

It revs at high at start up so it can warm up quicker, that's just the choke doing it's Job so it doesn't shut down!

it sounds like the dang engine is going to blow up and there is times when it won't kick down.

Sounds like you may have a very dirty throttle body clean with throttle body cleaner.
