71 thunderbird in drive it takes off slow then i have to switch it in low gear to get going good the tranny has been rebuilt it burns gas alot what could it be

i got a 71 thunderbird with a 429 motor when i put it in drive it takes off slow so i put it in
a lower gear just to get more speed im burning gas like no othe

Be sure the transmission oil is full and the proper type! As far a gas mileage, when it was new it didn't get 12 mpg so it should do less now with ethanol.
