Don't use a Ford dealer then?

the car is at the dealer, all I want to know is ...what is a reasonable time to replace the trans.

On an old car like your '64 the trans can be removed by a competent shop in an hour or 2 and then reinstalled in the same amount of time. Not sure how much rust is involved. I highly doubt you will be able to negotiate labor rates with the dealer. Try another shop.
