my ford probe does the same thing when its running and I unhook the idle air monitoring cable, causes it to idle rough and if I don't give it gas VERY slowly it will stall out. was neat to find out what that thing did. you may have blown a fuse for the device that monitors the air flow rate. also when you smell gas fumes near the rear of your car DO NOT LIGHT THE EXHAUST PIPE WITH A LIGHTER... its louder than a shotgun.

my car did this and found the fuel lines needed to be cleared completely clogged so I could start it but couldn't get into drive without a stall out.

Below is my reply to a similar thread just sent.... Yes problem solved about 2 months ago....finally found a shop that could check the fuel pressure. Not sure how they did so without a schrader valve or any port on the fuel system. But they found the fuel pump was putting out low pressure all the time. Apparently not so low that the car would not run, but low enough to not start right away after stopping for a short time (10 to about 30 minutes). So the shop installed a new fuel pump and I have had zero issues since then. I did not inquire as to why this was the issue but definitely solved the problem. Hope this helps!
