Dash lights, tail lights, headlights quit working

Asked by sheripenny2015 Mar 15, 2017 at 07:16 PM about the 1997 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The dash lights quit working followed by the taillights and the headlights. They bright lights still work but the switch has to be held into position for them to stay on. The fuses are all okay. What could be causing this?

Check the headlight switch. They get hot and finally fail. You can see this in the connector to the switch.

Then test the headlight switch with a digital multi meter.

A long shot. Open the trunk and on the left side...driver side...there should be a wiring harness next to the hood hinge .....wiggle...tug...inspect while the lights are on. Get back with results.

Check/clean ground wire at left front fender under hood. Another ground wire behind left kick panel left side dash.

I just had another flash back. Suggest you have your technician check the grounds at the points noted above.....and...any leaks you may have in the windshield of this vehicle. It appears when water from a leak drips down on that CI under the dash...well not good for a electronic circuit board. Then there is the issue of excessive HEAT. A bad ground can cause the circuit board to get to hot.....poof....IC...goes bad and causes the strange symptoms your vehicle presents. Have you had any body repairs done to this vehicle? Again...who ever found the root cause of this issue...Bravo.
