Question type: Maintenance & Repair

while driving at 35MPH-ish it started to slow down and would not accelerate. it
"chugged along" at 15MPH-ish while i tried to find a safe pull off spot, till it
came to a complete stop and would not move. I didn't push it hard but all the
electrical was still working. I turned it off to rest for just about two minutes and
tried again to just have the same results. would power on but not start or even
attempt too, so there were no noises coming from the engine. Im new to the "i
can fix it myself game" and although my previous projects went great and i feel
like i got the bug for working on cars, as it so rewarding, I feel as if anything
relating to the fuel pumps, injectors and things like that is out of my skill range.
since i'm just a cook that follows youtube videos step by step. Being a cook in
California, I dont make alot of money so I would like to check out what I can
and see it it's worth the fix since I only paid 2k for this car.

Any warning lights on or flashing when the engine is running? If yes....the computers on this vehicle should be scanned for Codes. Is it possible you ran out of gas?

Look for any obvious wiring problems , fluid loss . It should at least turn over ( crank ) . Do you hear the fuel pump prime the system when you it the key ? ( WHHHIIRRRR ) Alternator may have died and the battery got low enough to shut Er' down . If you're going to so your own repairs here are certain tools you'll need .

Let's see: While driving your 23 year old Camry, the engine just began to lose power until it gradually stopped. You have electricity to the car, but the engine won't turn over, or make any sounds when you turn the key. It sounds like the engine had insufficient lubrication, overheated, and died. Now the engine is frozen, or welded, so even the starter motor can't turn it. You likely had a CEL and temperature light on the dash, but the engine dying drew your attention away form it. Hit the starter and see if you can hear the solenoid engage. If so, put a wrench on the crankshaft bolt and try to turn the engine manually. I'm guessing the engine won't turn..... Tow the car to a mechanic and have him find a used engine; installed, the cost will likely be over two grand, which is more than the car's worth. Congratulations; you may now go shopping for a replacement car. And another Camry would be a good choice..... Friendly advice from a fellow Californian.

Might be a dead ignition switch.
