my 96 nissan maxima turns off wen i get to a stop sign or slow down and theres a check engine light on

If the "check engine" light comes on after the engine stalls, ignore it. That's normal. If it's on when the engine is running, pull the trouble code using a scan tool. Some auto parts stores will do that for free. In the mean time your symptoms sound like a sticking IAC (idle air control) valve. This valve regulates airflow to maintain the proper idle speed.
