What is causing a gas leak from the sending unit?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have a 1989 Ford E350 Travelmaster, we
traveled from NY to Wyoming, Caliornia, Nevada,
and Arizona. The highest temp outside has been
115°, if related. Gas is now leaking from what
appears to be the sending unit on top of gas tank.
This started in California after we got the brake
lines replaced. It is not consistent, and we think it
is now leaking while driving. The gas gauge has
been off since we bought it, so it is hard to tell how
much is leaking. We don't have a lot of money at
the moment, but are concerned. What could be
causing this?

Most likely when they replaced the rear brake lines they moved or bumped a fuel line, it cracked, and it's now leaking. Same thing happened to my Sister a few years ago when she got the fuel filter replaced on her 93 Cavalier. When plastic and rubber fuel lines get old they get stiff and are not flexible anymore. Sometimes the slightest movement will cause them to crack and leak. You're going to have to drop the gas tank and inspect the fuel lines. Hope that helps! Jim
