As soon as the engine wouldn't start, I would check for spark and proper fuel pressure. The most common failure that fits your description is a fuel pump. When the car and the pump are cold, the pump works ok but after it runs for a while, the bushings and pump housing warm up, things get sloppy inside the pump and once you shut it off, it won't engage again until it cools down. Check the pressure with a gauge - just pressing the fuel pressure relief (schrader) valve does not indicate adequate pressure. I see it frequently (in Crown Victoria PI's) when a Deputy shuts the car off after several hours and it won't restart. It gets towed in and I hit the key and drive it right into the shop. The fuel pump is either noisy or makes no noise at all and does not provide adequate pressure for very long. Sometimes, you can hit the fuel tank with a mallet and jar the pump enough to let it run - but only sometimes.
