Squeak/grind = Ball joints. Just changed mine + tie rod.

On fords sometime when power steering pump is low on oil or weak it will make squeaking sound .Easy way to narrow it down is lubricate the ball joints with chain grease first if the sound goes away its the ball joints. If sound still there try checking the level of power steering fluid or changing pump.

Had the same problem on my 01 Lincoln Continental. Looked at everything and finally found that the lower ball joints were shot. Replace both side and squeaking stopped. Could hardly believe that would cause a "steering" leak. It only squeaked when I turned the steering wheel from left to right and right to left. Thought for sure it was something in the steering. Wrong.
