1995 Ford Explorer

Asked by Carneko Feb 20, 2016 at 06:12 PM about the 1995 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Ford explorer 1995 was stolen for a joy ride.
They hot wired and tore out the ignition, ripped out
the original radio and cd player. Police found it
abandoned. The tow company was able to start it
he mentioned when he dropped it off. While sitting
over night the battery went dead. Recharged the
battery, replaced the ignition but for now left the
missing radio. Now it wont start with the new
key/ignition. I did notice a "intel-a-key black box
flashes and blinking in distress but other than that
it wont start.
We jumped the relay with a wire and the new
key/ignition starts it right up. A good guess is
some old antit-heft system or wiring is blocking
this vehicle from starting. Any advice,
suggestions?

I am so sorry that this happened to you! People can be so awful and thoughtless. You are right on the money, when you are referring to the anti-theft system. Because the starter has an immobilizer on it, the new ignition must be synced with the frequency of the starter. Unfortunately, I do not possess the skills or knowledge on how to do this. I would search some Explorer or Ford forums but ultimately, when it comes to the electrical, I would say swing her by a shop and ask them if they can point you in the right direction. I am sorry I couldn't be more help, and best of luck!

You will probably require the services of an automotive locksmith. The system will require reprogramming with a new ignition.
