2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A few weeks ago the active air flap system quit working. It was replaced. A
week or so later, I was on the turnpike with cruise control on and the car
"stuttered" as if it suddenly didn't have power or gas. Only lasted a second,
no errors or lights, cruise control didn't even disengage. Otherwise seemed to
drive fine. A week or so later, in the exact same circumstance it did out again.
Again, no lights or errors. The 3rd time, was going up hill, the car stuttered,
the accelerator was to the floor, and the car was slowing down drastically &
an error light flashed but disappeared too quickly for me to read it as I was
trying to pull to the side of the road. I turned the car off, turned it back on and
it seemed to run normally. Dealer said it had vo!tahe error codes but that both
batteries were fine and the car just needed updates. We did those, they
assured me that the car was fixed. The days later,I'm going up a small hill, the
car surged this time, like it was getting too much gas and then a warning light
that said " hybrid warning, safety stop and do not drive" came on. I
stopped, turned the car off, turned it back on, the error reset and I took it back
to the dealer. They said it was a issue with the air flap, something had gotten
stuck in the flap and was preventing it from working properly. They removed it
and again assured me the car was fixed. Got 10 miles from the dealer and the
car stuttered as it did the very first time. Parked it at home for the night. When
I started it i up the next morning & lightly depressed the accelerator it revved
like it was out of gear and then the same hybrid system warning back on.
Again turned it off and back and drove out to the dealer. This time they said it
was the regular battery. Although the first time I took it in, they treated both
batteries and said they were perfectly fine. They replaced the battery, we
drive out about 30 miles, seemed fine. Got 2 miles down the road, speed at a
light and when I went to accelerate the car lurched forward violently and the
same hyrbid system warning came on. Pulled over, the error wolf not reset
and everything if you tried to drive it would violently lurch forward. This time
they hooked it up to the computer and drove it and said it  was the electric
oul pump. So, we changed that out. Drive it about 100 miles. The car doors
not seem to be switching to EV mode add often as it should, the MPG seems
to fluctuate drastically and the car once again "stuttered". It's starting to
seem that whatever is wrong I'd causing excess wear and tear and dancing
parts along the way (battery, oil pump) . I'm 3 weeks, 2 grand in and right
back where I started. This is the only Hyundai dealership for several hundred
miles so I can't take it anywhere else. Does anyone have any ideas? Because
at this point it feels like they are just fixing the problems that popped up but
not fixing the real problem

Battery distribution management system. We have had the same issue and had our original battery replaced as well. We are waiting to get it back, but will update my answer if this doesn't fix the issue. Ours is a 2014 that we bought new and have regularly serviced at the Hyundai dealership. I feel your pain. We have had poor mpg since we bought it averaging 32-34. Fingers crossed this is the fix.
