CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 139 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,630, 30.9% of 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid stands out by pairing impressive fuel economy with the qualities buyers expect from a family sedan. It is described as a comfortable, well-equipped midsize sedan with a fuel-efficient powertrain that also delivers solid performance, which gives it a broader appeal than a hybrid that focuses only on efficiency. Its stylish design and impressive technology add to that appeal, making it feel more modern and upscale than a basic commuter car.
That balance is also what makes it distinctive in the hybrid sedan space: it aims to deliver efficiency without giving up the everyday usefulness and comfort that matter to family buyers. The main limitation noted is that all-wheel drive is not available, so shoppers who want that capability will need to look elsewhere.

After much research looking at Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai, we decided on the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited, as that is the only package that had all of the amenities that we wanted. We downsized from an Acura MDX Advance Pkg 2016 (3rd row seating). The new Hyundai had all of the features of our Acura and a few more. Best mileage in its class with a very comfortable ride. We own it a little over a week and LOVE it so far. Will report back in a few months with more detailed info.

Nice esthetics but lacks power and room. Would make a good car for someone who didn’t need to transport multiple people. Just wasn’t what I needed.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that hybrid-specific repairs can be more expensive than routine gas-car maintenance if the car has been neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check the hybrid system, brakes, tires, and electronics before you commit. Focus on overall condition and equipment level, since the trims differ meaningfully in comfort and tech.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Blue trim is the most efficiency-focused and starts with cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, remote keyless entry, and push-button start. The SEL adds more comfort and convenience, including heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a wireless charging pad, and a Bose premium audio system. The Limited adds the most upscale features, including leather upholstery, heated-and-ventilated front seats, a larger touchscreen, and a solar panel roof.
- Powertrain: The Sonata Hybrid uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and battery pack for 192 horsepower through a six-speed automatic transmission. It is described as quick off the line, with enough power for highway speeds and passing, and it often starts in battery-only mode before the engine seamlessly kicks in.
- Safety package: It comes standard with forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-follow assist, and a driver-attention monitor. The Limited adds a head-up display, a 360-degree surround-view parking monitor, and front and rear parking sensors.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Limited upgrades to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and real-time traffic updates. The SEL and Limited also include a wireless charging pad.
- Fuel efficiency: The Blue returns 50 mpg city, 54 mpg highway, and 52 mpg combined. The SEL and Limited return 45 mpg city, 51 mpg highway, and 47 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is offered in 3 trim levels: Blue, SEL, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Blue: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest fuel economy and the lowest starting price. It gives you the core hybrid experience, plus standard comfort and convenience features that make it easy to live with every day.
- SEL: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of value and equipment. It adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a Bose audio system, wireless charging, and other upgrades that make the cabin feel more premium without jumping all the way to the top trim.
- Limited: This is the right pick if you want the most upscale version of the Sonata Hybrid. It adds leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, the larger touchscreen, and the solar panel roof, so it suits you best if you want the fullest feature set.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, while the Limited adds extra parking and visibility tech.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 141 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.64% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,505, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $17,602 sits slightly below last year's $19,480.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the car in good condition, you can reduce the impact of that softer market. The trim mix also matters: better-equipped versions may be easier to market later if they remain clean and well maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is a 2021 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick and earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
It comes standard with a full suite of driver-assistance features, including forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-follow assist, and a driver-attention monitor. The Limited adds a head-up display, a 360-degree surround-view parking monitor, and front and rear parking sensors.
One caveat is that the base headlights earn a Marginal score, while the optional LED headlights are the ones tied to the stronger safety recognition.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.64% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong fuel economy with a comfortable, well-equipped midsize-sedan package.
Consider the 2020 if:
- It is praised for strong fuel economy, upscale refinement, and standout value.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the better all-around choice if you want the newer model-year package with strong safety, good inventory, and a softer price than last year. If you are mainly chasing value and can live with an older model year, the 2020 remains worth a look for its efficiency and refinement.
