Transfer case error codes

I have a 97 ford explorer limited edition sohc 4lt 5 speed auto. vehicle sometimes makes poping noise when slowing
down and transmission feels like its trying to go into overdrive or 4wd. I had the vehicle check for fault
codes. tests found to have 2 codes relating to 4wd transfer case circuit.P1828 transmission transfer case
high to low shift. relay coil failure and P1820 transmission transfer case low to high shift relay circuit
failure. what does it mean and what do I have to replace.
Any ideas greatly appreciated

Hi Papa Many thanks for your reply Can you advise where I may locate the relay or sensor, the problem seems to happen when easing off the throtel between 100 - 80 kms. This happens about once a month, and only if decreasing speed quickly

sensor should be on side of tranny.their is a small motor on back of transfer case unplug it,see if that stops the problem.or may be the problem,with it unpluged it will not go into 4x4.another possable problem could be the push button switch for the 4x4 is bad.unplug the small motor first.
