1999 Ford Explorer won't start after being turned off

Asked by Cin60 Feb 15, 2018 at 04:24 PM about the 1999 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer that starts
hard but once it's running it's fine. But
after I turn it off & try to restart it
doesn't even crank over. After I leave it
sit 4-5 (gets cold) it starts fine. Coil
pack has been changed. When the air
flow is disconnected it runs better.

Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good on both ends. When problem is ongoing and the starter motor won't crank, use proper jumper wire on load side of starter relay, the load side is that line with arrowhead. Jump terminal 30 to terminal 87, unplug the relay, terminal 30 is hot all the time. The starter motor should crank the engine. If you try that, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking is set. If it does crank with jumper but otherwise not, check control side of relay, terminals 85 and 86 in the diagram. The control side needs both voltage and ground, the black wire on the control side is ground. The top wire is voltage on the control side.

Crank sensor comes to mind, any codes? Would check the condition of the air and fuel filter as well.
