AC compressor keeps starting and stopping

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Was going to use a can of A/C pro to recharge, but noticed the compressor
would start then stop, then restart and stop again and again, etc.
Will a recharge work?

The only way to know for sure is to hook up gauges to see how much Freon is in the system. Advising you to just add Freon would be guessing on anyone's part.

There is a gauge on A/C Pro - would that be adequate to test?

AC refrigerant does not evaporate or disappear magically from the system. Cycling of the AC is normal. If it cycles on and off quickly the system could be low. Meaning the refrigerant is leaking out and air is getting in. Adding Refrigerant will make it cool inside for a while, but air in the system damages components. I have a 99 Explorer which was purchased new. It still cools as it did on day one. If you cannot do it yourself, bring it to a shop, determine where the leak is, replace the bad parts, and vacuum and recharge the system. It will be less expensive in the long run.
