why no power going up a hill

why will 1997 geo has no power going up hill . 25 mph is about max speed

What symptoms do you get aside from the lack of power? Does the motor strain a lot or anything?

I would guess that the ignition timing is retarding to the point of base timing to prevent detonation, if you can get your hands on a scanner that reads live data it can be very helpful
