Why can't I get heat after replacing thermostat and anti-freeze?

Van kept overheating, even with coolant.  Replaced thermostat and coolant.  
Now van is steaming, as if it's overheating, but it isn't and there is still no heat.  
The heat will occasionally kick on, for about 5 minutes, then blow cold air again.

replace the radiator cap , off and on heat sounds like an air pocket in the coolant system , look for a bleeder on that system may be by the thermostat , if you have an over heating problem that is serious there's no point in fixing a minor issue , fyi
