my speedometer stopped working and is kmaking a clicking or ticking noise in the dash. what is it?

I took the speedometer cable out and it is not broken and seems to turn well and is lubricated. do I still replace it or could it be something else. The ticking noise only happens when the car is moving.

Sounds like the speedometer broke internally and a new one should fix the issue.
