My 1971 MGB's Speedometer and Mile ometer have stopped working

On the back of your speedometer there is a cable that goes down to (usually) the transmission. Sounds like it broke. HTH. -Jim

Yep, broken cable. Unscrew it from the back of the speedometer. Pull the cable out of the sheath. Replace it one of he same length. Since it's broken - be sure to remove both parts. There used to be universal kits that you cut to fit.

Put in an original replacement cable, they're cheap to buy and a lot less messing about than a universal one you cut to fit. I think Moss does them for about 10 pound including VAT.
