When the Toyota matrix first appeared in 2003, its unique styling quickly began to turn heads. However, Toyota's design goals extended beyond just a distinguished look. The Matrix was designed to be function. At the time, this new car was a pioneering blend of compact car efficiency and small SUV convenience. While the Matrix shares the same platform as the Toyota Corolla, it offers much more interior space and flexibility.
The 2007 Matrix is available with either a base level trim or the more upscale XR finish. XR also adds some sporty touches, but the Matrix is not not marked by its performance. Air conditioning and a CD audio system are standard on all models, and the XR adds keyless entry, power windows and locks, and a rear wiper. The M-Theory package can be added to provide a more aggressive appearance.
The Matrix power plant is a 1.8 liter DOHC inline four, mated here to a four speed automatic transmission. The 126 horsepower engine is enhanced by Toyota's Variable Valve Timing + intelligence technology, which increases power, lowers emissions, and improves fuel economy. Fuel efficiency estimates for the automatic transmission XR are 29/34 mpg.

The Toyota Matrix is unchanged for 2007, but the XRS trim and AWD option are no longer available. All models are now front wheel drive. There are four Matrix models offered: two trims each available with an automatic or manual transmission.
The lower level trim comes equipped with a CD player and air conditioning. Most convenience options are packaged together, but larger wheels, ABS, and cruise control are available as stand alone add-ons.
This eye-catching hatchback is now in its fifth year of production. With the Matrix, Toyota has attempted to combine the functional qualities of a small SUV with the ease and convenience of a compact sedan. The Matrix is priced to compete with other sporty looking hatchbacks like the PT Cruiser and Mazda 3.
The Matrix performs similar to the base Corolla which shares its platform. The 2600 pound compact car is powered by a VVT-i 1.8 liter inline four, which provides 126 horsepower and 122 pound feet of torque. The automatic transmission Matrix has an EPA rating of 29/34 mpg.
