There were no changes to the 1999 Mercedes-Benz S420 from the 1998 model year, as the company planned a complete overhaul of its S-Class with an early launch of the 2000 model year. 1999 was significant in that it marked the last year the company would produce the S420.
The S420 had a 4.2 liter V8 engine that produced 275 horsepower. The car road on a 123.6 inch wheelbase.
Complaints about the vehicle seemed to be minor, and seemed to revolve around the placement of cup holders and the fact that the vehicle was only rated for Michelin tires. More importantly, however, the S420 was "fun to drive" and "turned heads."

The 1999 Mercedes-Benz S500 marked the final year before a major overhaul of the entire S-Class by the German auto maker. As a result, there were no major changes to the vehicle, although Mercedes did mark the finale by offering 600 copies of a Grand Edition S500 with special wheels, tires, paint, wood trim and other luxuries.
A 5.0 liter V8 engine powered the S500 to an astonishing 315 horsepower. Safety features included ABS, front and side airbags, Brake Assist, BabySmart child seat detection and ASR traction control.
While owners and test drivers grumbled about fuel economy, they gave the car high marks for its acceleration, ride, passenger room, cargo space and handling.
