Reviews Summary

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are smart for certain consumers. They allow people to give electric vehicle ownership a try before diving into the deep end of the pool by acclimating people to nightly plug-ins and the benefits of electric-only driving.

At the same time, they eliminate a phenomenon called “range anxiety,” which is the mild panic EV drivers may feel when their battery gets low. That’s because they also have a gasoline engine, and that means you can take a cross-country trip in one without ever needing to find a charging station.

Talk about a win-win situation. And among luxury PHEVs, the 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge is an appealing choice. But it certainly does not come cheap.

Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

2023 Volvo XC60

10/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

10/10

The Volvo XC60 Recharge and the Chevy Trax appear quite different, from fuel source to size to pricing tier. Yet comparing them yields interesting insights.

The 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge stood out as a luxury plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) offering an ideal blend for those new to electric vehicles. It promised an escape from "range anxiety" with its combination of an electric motor and a gasoline engine, allowing for easy long-distance travel without the constant search for charging stations. Its status as a luxury PHEV came with a high price tag, but its benefits of electric driving and the flexibility of a hybrid system presented a compelling package for those considering a dip into electric vehicle ownership.

Conversely, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax emerged from its hiatus with a significant overhaul, targeting the subcompact crossover market with a more appealing design and updated technological features. It aimed to offer affordable, basic transportation with the added benefits of increased space and modern tech, positioning itself as an attractive entry-level option below the Chevy Trailblazer and against competitors like the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks.

Picture of 2023 Volvo XC60
Performance

2023 Volvo XC60

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
The 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge impresses with a combined output of 455 horsepower from its turbocharged PHEV powertrain, providing an exhilarating acceleration to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds and a variety of driving modes to suit different needs. Its performance is rated at 9 out of 10, reflecting the vehicle's dynamic capabilities and efficient use of electric power for daily driving. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax receives an 8 out of 10 for performance, featuring a new 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Despite a decrease in power compared to its predecessor, the Trax offers a satisfactory driving experience with minimal turbo lag and competent handling that leans more towards a car-like feel than that of a traditional crossover.
Form and function

2023 Volvo XC60

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
In the realm of form and function, the 2023 Volvo XC60 garners a rating of 7 out of 10. It stands out for offering exceptional comfort, particularly with its front seats that feature soft Nappa leather, heating, ventilation, and power cushion extensions for improved thigh support. Although it accommodates up to five passengers, the compact SUV design means legroom is somewhat limited, especially for taller individuals. The panoramic sunroof and supportive seat cushions, however, contribute to a more spacious feel. Cargo space is notable, with 25.8 cubic feet available behind the rear seats, expanding to 63.3 cubic feet when the seats are folded down. The vehicle's design also includes a dedicated area for the charging cord and an air suspension system for easier loading of heavy items, though the battery pack's presence eliminates underfloor storage. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax scores an 8 out of 10 for form and function, reflecting thoughtful improvements over its predecessor. The redesign results in three more inches of rear-seat legroom and a slight increase in front-seat legroom, although headroom and shoulder room have seen reductions. Despite these changes, the Trax offers a comfortable and accessible driving position with excellent outward visibility, distinguishing itself in the subcompact crossover segment. Cargo capacity is competitive, with 25.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54.1 cubic feet when they're folded, positioning the Trax as a practical choice for both passengers and their belongings.
Technology

2023 Volvo XC60

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10
Technology sees the 2023 Volvo XC60 earning an 8 out of 10, with a focus on its Google Built-in infotainment system, 12-inch digital instrument panel, and comprehensive connectivity and media options. Volvo's system impresses with its ease of use and advanced voice-recognition capabilities, although the integration of climate controls within the touchscreen may not appeal to all users. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax edges out the XC60 with a 9 out of 10 rating, thanks to significant upgrades including an 11-inch touchscreen on higher trims, wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and additional tech features that are rare in its segment. Despite some ergonomic quirks, the Trax's infotainment system is user-friendly and modern.
Safety

2023 Volvo XC60

10/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10
Safety is a hallmark of the Volvo brand, and the 2023 XC60 does not disappoint, securing a perfect 10 out of10 rating. It comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including the advanced Pilot Assist system. The mild-hybrid versions received top marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reflecting Volvo's commitment to safety. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax, with a safety rating of 7 out of 10, offers a solid range of driver-assistance technologies but lacks the comprehensive safety features and high safety ratings associated with the XC60. Its inclusion of the Teen Driver system and optional safety features, however, demonstrates Chevy's effort to enhance safety within the constraints of an entry-level vehicle.
