2023 Acura MDX Reviews Summary

Guided by a new "Precision Crafted Performance" ethos, Acura has come a long way in the past six years. Though it canceled its NSX sports car and eliminated the sport-hybrid powertrain from its vehicles, Acura’s four remaining cars and SUVs boast appealing designs, satisfying driving character, and modern technologies. The 2023 Acura MDX is the midsize three-row crossover SUV of the lineup, last redesigned just one year ago. This year, Acura improves the 2023 MDX with a complimentary three-year subscription to AcuraLink connected services and scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles.

2024 Chevrolet Trax Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

2023 Acura MDX

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10

The Acura MDX is a midsize luxury crossover, while the Chevy Trax is a subcompact crossover from a more mass-market automaker. They’re both popular options, however, making a comparison worthwhile.

The 2023 Acura MDX, under the banner of "Precision Crafted Performance," represented Acura's dedication to design, performance, and technology. Despite discontinuing its NSX sports car and the sport-hybrid powertrain, Acura maintains a strong lineup of models with attractive designs, a satisfying drive, and modern tech. The midsize MDX SUV, redesigned not long before 2023, added complimentary AcuraLink services and scheduled maintenance for this model year, enhancing its value proposition.

On the flip side, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax made a grand re-entry with a completely revamped design, positioning itself as a formidable contender in the subcompact crossover segment. Bigger, stylish, and packed with technology, the new Trax aims to bridge the gap between traditional cars and crossovers, targeting both loyal Chevrolet customers and newcomers with its appealing design and practical features.

Performance

2023 Acura MDX

4/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
Performance ratings from CarGurus show the 2023 Acura MDX scoring a 4 out of 10, with its turbocharged V6 engine offering increased power but falling short in delivering a cohesive driving experience. The MDX Type S, despite its performance enhancements, struggles with transmission responsiveness, ride compliance, and fuel efficiency. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax earns an 8 out of 10, with its new 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine providing adequate power and improved acceleration over its predecessor. Despite being front-wheel drive only, the Trax offers a car-like handling experience that is both predictable and nimble, exceeding expectations for refinement in its segment.
Form and function

2023 Acura MDX

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
In the realm of practicality and space, the 2023 Acura MDX offers a well-thought-out cabin with a focus on comfort and versatility, earning it a 7 out of 10 rating. The MDX provides three rows of seating, accommodating up to seven passengers, with the option for a two or three-seat configuration in the second row to meet different family needs. The cargo area is equally impressive, offering 18.1 cubic feet of space behind the third row, which expands to 39.1 cubic feet with the third row folded down, and reaches a maximum of 71.4 cubic feet with both rear rows flat. This space, combined with luxury features like 16-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, underscores the MDX's commitment to combining functionality with upscale living. On the other side, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax shines with an 8 out of 10 rating, demonstrating thoughtful design in maximizing interior space within its subcompact dimensions. The Trax's redesign brings about a more spacious and comfortable interior, especially notable in the rear seats, where legroom has been generously increased by 3 inches. Despite a slight decrease in headroom and shoulder room, the vehicle maintains a comfortable and inviting environment for all passengers. Cargo capacity is another area where the Trax excels; it offers 25.6 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up, expanding to 54.1 cubic feet with them folded down. This capacity, combined with the vehicle's car-like driving position and visibility, positions the Trax as a practical and appealing choice for those who value both function and form in a compact crossover.
Technology

2023 Acura MDX

5/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10
Technology ratings highlight a disparity, with the 2023 Acura MDX receiving a 5 out of 10. Its dual 12.3-inch displays and True Touchpad Interface offer a modern but sometimes challenging user experience. Despite this, features like wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a premium sound system add to its appeal. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax excels with a 9 out of 10, thanks to significant upgrades in its infotainment system. Standard and optional touchscreens, along with wireless connectivity features, provide a user-friendly and accessible technology experience that rivals more expensive models.
Safety

2023 Acura MDX

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10
Both vehicles are closely matched in safety, each scoring a 7 out of 10. The 2023 Acura MDX offers a comprehensive suite of safety features, including AcuraWatch, but experiences some issues with false alerts and system inaccuracies. Despite good crash-test ratings, these glitches can detract from the overall sense of security. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax comes equipped with a solid array of driver-assist features. Its focus on safety is evident, making it a strong contender for buyers prioritizing security.
