Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

Reviews Summary

The 2022 Infiniti QX60 is a premium midsize three-row crossover SUV with front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD). Slotting into the Infiniti SUV lineup between the two-row QX50 and the full-size three-row QX80, the QX60 aims at the “just right” area of the market with a healthy dose of luxury, technology, and driving satisfaction.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2022 INFINITI QX60

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, resulting in a similar appearance to the lower-level model and the smaller 2021 Grand Cherokee L. It featured traditional SUV styling with a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly with laser-etched knurling in the slots, and the wheel center caps had an acrylic glass covering to protect the “Wagoneer” logo. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent front and rear suspension, while aluminum and composite materials helped save weight. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered high-end features like 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, lumbar support, and four-way power headrests, along with Nappa leather upholstery and optional higher-grade Palermo leather.

The 2022 INFINITI QX60 underwent a complete makeover, featuring a new exterior design, interior, powertrains, and technologies. The redesign paralleled updates to its Nissan cousin, the Pathfinder, both using the Nissan D platform. The QX60's exterior changes resulted in a dramatic, attractive crossover SUV with a prominent grille, slim LED headlights, and oversized air intakes. The long hood and steeply-raked windshield conveyed elegance, while the roof appeared to float above the cabin due to blacked-out pillars. The top-of-the-line Autograph trim level featured a contrasting black roof, enhancing the floating effect. Inside, the QX60 felt wide and open, with quilted leather upholstery on the seats and dash in the Autograph trim. The 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display was well-placed, and the TFT instrument panel delivered crisp graphics. The QX60 models were crafted at the Nissan plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, showcasing high craftsmanship and build quality.

Performance

2022 INFINITI QX60

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, with cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds, despite its roughly 6,400-pound weight. The Grand Wagoneer came standard with four-wheel drive, featuring the Quadra-Drive II system with a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. It also included the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, offering adjustable height for off-roading or reducing aerodynamic drag. With a maximum ground clearance of 10 inches, it could handle various terrains, although its size limited its off-road capabilities. The Grand Wagoneer provided a quiet cabin and smooth ride, but its handling felt ungainly at higher speeds.

The 2022 INFINITI QX60 featured a nine-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous CVT, which improved the driving experience with clean and crisp shifts. It was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 295 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy was estimated at 21 mpg city/26 mpg highway/23 mpg combined for FWD models and 20 mpg city/25 mpg highway/22 mpg combined for AWD models. The QX60's suspension was reworked, providing a smooth and serene ride, although it wasn't designed for aggressive cornering. The vehicle excelled on highways and suburban streets, offering comfort for passengers in all rows. While not tested off-road, the QX60 was more suited for smooth roads and urban environments.

Form and function

2022 INFINITI QX60

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered seating for seven with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It provided more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Infiniti QX80, although front-row space was more limited. With 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place and 70.9 cubic feet with the third row stowed, it offered more cargo space in common configurations. However, with all rear seats folded, its 94.2 cubic feet of cargo space was less than some rivals. The Grand Wagoneer had a maximum towing capacity of 9,850 pounds, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight. It featured a standard sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and large storage bins, although forward visibility was somewhat limited.

The 2022 INFINITI QX60, while not a minivan, offered functionality akin to one with its three-row seating and ample storage. The front featured a roomy center console with smartphone cubby, cupholders, and covered storage. The gear selector's shift-by-wire technology allowed for open space beneath the console for additional storage. The second-row seats could slide to share space between rows, with a 60/40 split bench or twin captain’s chairs in the Autograph trim. The third row was accessible and comfortable for adults, depending on second-row legroom generosity. The QX60 provided 14.5 cubic feet of luggage space behind the third row, expanding to 41.6 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 75.4 cubic feet with both rows down. It had a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, expandable to 6,000 pounds with the towing package.

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with 3D graphics, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. It supported simultaneous pairing for two Bluetooth-enabled phones and offered a 4G-LTE WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices. Second-row passengers had a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate control, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Grand Wagoneer had a larger touchscreen than the standard Wagoneer and a second screen for functions like seat massagers. It could be equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, controlling navigation and entertainment. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system, with an Android-based operating system and OTA updates, was standard, although the screen response was slow, and the instrument cluster graphics were plain.

The 2022 INFINITI QX60 came with full LED lighting, a power liftgate, and the latest 12.3-inch InTouch Interactive display with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto. It featured an AT&T WiFi hotspot for up to seven devices and multiple USB charge points throughout the cabin. A wireless charging pad was standard on higher trims, and the navigation system was included in all but the base trim. The QX60 introduced a simplified version of Alexa for voice commands. Autograph models had a 10.8-inch head-up display and a smart rearview mirror, replacing the passive image with a live camera feed. A nine-speaker audio system was standard, with a 17-speaker Bose system available on higher trims.

Safety

2022 INFINITI QX60

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. It included standard safety features like a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Optional features included a driver-attention monitor, night vision, traffic-sign recognition, and advanced driver-assistance systems. Active Driving Assist combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, with a hands-free version planned for certain highways.

The 2022 INFINITI QX60 also lacked current safety ratings but was expected to perform well based on previous models. It came with standard safety features, including a comprehensive airbag system, LATCH connectors, and advanced driver assistance systems like forward emergency braking, predictive forward-collision warning, and blind-spot warning. ProPilot Assist was standard on most trims, with optional features like blind-spot intervention, lane-departure warning, and a surround-view camera system.
