Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

Reviews Summary

In Volvo speak, “40” denotes an entry-level model. While the Swedish automaker no longer rosters the S40 sedan or V40 wagon in the United States, the XC40 subcompact crossover remains to compete with the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Lexus UX, and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class for aspiring luxury-car owners’ dollars.

The XC40 was unveiled in 2017, arriving in the U.S. as a 2019 model, and hasn’t undergone a redesign since. An all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge variant joined the lineup as a 2021 model. Volvo’s other current EV, the C40 Recharge, is also broadly similar to the XC40 models, but with a coupe-like body style.

For 2023, Volvo gave the XC40 several notable updates, including new mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and the Android-based infotainment system previously seen on the XC40 Recharge and other Volvo models.

The mild-hybrid lineup includes base Core, mid-level Plus, and top Ultimate trim levels, with B4 front-wheel drive (FWD) and B5 all-wheel drive (AWD) drivetrains. This Volvo XC40 review is based on the Ultimate trim in B5 AWD spec.

Look and feel

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10

2023 Volvo XC40

9/10

When comparing the look and feel of the 2023 Volvo XC40 and the 2024 Chevrolet Trax, both vehicles impress with their distinct styles and substantial updates. The XC40 is a luxury crossover, and it retains its elegant and minimalistic Scandinavian design, characterized by Volvo's signature "Thor's Hammer" headlights and a new pixelated design for 2023. Its exterior updates include a slightly more angular front bumper and new wheel designs, subtly refreshing its appearance while maintaining the model's iconic flat-roofed, SUV-like profile. Interior-wise, the XC40 promotes a minimalist aesthetic with high-quality materials and advanced features like a panoramic moonroof and optional air purifier, though its all-black interior may remind some of a utility vehicle.

In contrast, the mass-market 2024 Chevrolet Trax undergoes a dramatic transformation, adopting a "longer, lower, wider" stance significantly departing from its predecessor. It gains a bold new look with styling cues borrowed from the midsize Chevy Blazer, including a prominent grille and distinctively shaped rear. The Trax's interior sees a complete overhaul with an emphasis on modernity and functionality, featuring larger touchscreens and upgraded materials across various trims, although its focus on affordability is evident in the choice of finishes and upholstery.

Performance

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2023 Volvo XC40

8/10
Performance-wise, the XC40 introduces mild-hybrid powertrains, enhancing fuel efficiency and providing a more refined driving experience. Its B4 and B5 powertrain options offer impressive acceleration and a comfortable ride, with the Recharge model adding an all-electric variant for those seeking greater power and environmental consideration. The Trax, opting for simplicity, equips a single engine option: a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder, prioritizing fuel efficiency and adequate power for daily driving. Its car-like handling and improved noise-cancellation technologies suggest a focus on urban and suburban commuting comfort.
Form and function

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10

2023 Volvo XC40

8/10
In terms of form and function, both vehicles cater to the compact SUV market but with different priorities. The XC40 boasts a sophisticated design with practical storage solutions and a comfortable interior. In terms of cargo capacity, the XC40 offers 20.7 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and expands to 47.2 cubic feet with the seats folded down. These figures are slightly less than what you'll find in the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, but the Volvo compensates with a standard power tailgate for convenience and thoughtful interior storage solutions. The scalloped door panels not only add a touch of elegance but also create additional storage opportunities, perfectly accommodating items like bottles or small bags. The center console and phone tray also offer ample space, considering the compact dimensions of the interior. The Trax, benefiting from its design overhaul, offers increased interior space, especially in rear-seat legroom, although some dimensions like headroom and shoulder room see reductions. With the rear seats in place, the Trax offers 25.6 cubic feet of luggage capacity, expanding to 54.1 cubic feet with the seats folded down. This increase not only makes the Trax more competitive within its segment but also provides a practical advantage for drivers and passengers needing to transport larger items or embark on extended trips.
Technology

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2023 Volvo XC40

9/10
Technology in both vehicles is advanced, with the XC40 featuring an Android-based infotainment system with Google apps integration and the Trax debuting larger touchscreens and wireless connectivity features, indicating a significant leap forward in Chevy's infotainment offerings.
Safety

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

2023 Volvo XC40

7/10
Safety features in both cars reflect the manufacturers' commitments to driver and passenger protection, with the XC40 including a comprehensive suite of standard safety technologies and the Trax offering a respectable array of driver-assist features, although lacking some of the more advanced options available in the Volvo.
