2023 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

Every car shopper out there has a hierarchy of needs. They put some needs above other needs. Whether you are looking for the best fuel economy, the most cargo space, or the newest tech and safety features, certain vehicles excel in some areas or falls behind in others. The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder does not stand out courtesy of any one particular characteristic, but much like the people shopping for it, the Pathfinder is a combination of attributes in one vehicle.

For the 2023 model year, Nissan has introduced the Rock Creek edition. It’s a more rugged version of the Pathfinder. That’s a bit ironic because, like many entrants in this family-hauling segment, the Pathfinder started out decades ago as tough, truck-based SUVs. So while the Pathfinder has evolved into a more comfortable vehicle, the Rock Creek appears to be an attempt to capture the spirit of the early Nissan SUVs. So, how does the Pathfinder stack up within the popular and hotly contested midsize SUV segment? And does the Rock Creek warrant attention as an off-road vehicle?

2023 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

If you scrub electric-only Teslas from the list, the Lexus RX is the best-selling luxury vehicle in America. The model first went on sale about 25 years ago, and it has cultivated a loyal following with people who aspire to own a reliable, refined, safe, and stylish luxury crossover SUV. To say the redesigned 2023 Lexus RX represents the mother of all risk/reward scenarios is an understatement. But based on a day driving numerous versions of the new 2023 RX, we’d say Lexus has struck the right balance with its latest two-row midsize SUV.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

8/10

2023 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder carried over its modern design from the previous year, maintaining a balance between traditional and futuristic elements. Its exterior featured angular lines and distinctive headlights, while the interior offered a clean and practical layout. The Pathfinder's cabin was designed for ease of use, with a sensible arrangement that was both visually appealing and functional. The SUV was available in several trims, each offering a range of features from basic to luxurious, with the Rock Creek trim adding a rugged, off-road aesthetic.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus RX presented a more refined and sophisticated appearance. It was shorter in height but broader and longer in wheelbase, giving it a more compact look despite its unchanged overall length. The RX's exterior design was characterized by a signature spindle-style grille and a floating roof effect, lending it a modern yet conservative style. Inside, the RX boasted a thoroughly modern interior with fewer buttons and a focus on digital instrumentation. The cabin was luxurious, with high-quality materials and a range of upholstery options, ensuring a premium feel.

Performance

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

2023 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. The Rock Creek variant offered a slight power increase, with 295 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Power was delivered through a 9-speed automatic transmission, with options for front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Pathfinder's off-road capabilities were enhanced in the Rock Creek model, which featured a taller suspension and off-road shocks. Despite its rugged features, the Pathfinder provided a smooth and quiet ride, although its unique shifter design was noted as potentially distracting.

The 2023 Lexus RX, on the other hand, was powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. This engine offered better performance at higher altitudes and improved fuel economy compared to the previous V6. The RX's ride was generally smooth, though the Luxury trim exhibited some body motion over uneven surfaces. The F Sport Handling trim, with its adaptive suspension, provided a more secure and stable ride. The RX's acceleration was satisfactory, with the AWD model reaching 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, and its fuel economy was slightly below expectations.

Form and function

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder offered up to 80.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded, 45 cubic feet with the second row in use, and 16.6 cubic feet with all seats upright. The interior provided ample headroom and legroom in the first two rows, with the third row suitable for shorter trips. The Pathfinder featured numerous storage compartments and cupholders, enhancing its practicality. The Rock Creek model's roof rack was functional, though its proximity to the roof could pose challenges in snowy conditions.

The 2023 Lexus RX provided a comfortable interior, with the Luxury trim offering premium leather upholstery and advanced seat adjustments. The F Sport Handling trim featured sportier seats with enhanced bolstering. The RX's back seat was roomy, though taller passengers might find headroom limited. While the RX's cargo space was improved over the previous model, it remained modest for the segment, with 29.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 46.2 cubic feet with the seats folded.

Higher trims featured a 9-inch display, with additional tech such as wireless device charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot. While the system was user-friendly, its graphics were considered dated compared to competitors. The Pathfinder included multiple USB ports and a six-speaker stereo, ensuring connectivity and entertainment for passengers.

The 2023 Lexus RX introduced the new Lexus Interface infotainment system, available with a 9.8-inch or 14-inch touchscreen. It supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with various connected services. The system featured an Intelligent Assistant for voice commands, though it occasionally provided inaccurate results. The RX also offered a premium Mark Levinson sound system, digital instrumentation, and advanced features like a digital rearview mirror and head-up display.
