2023 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

Every car shopper out there has a hierarchy of needs. They put some needs above other needs. Whether you are looking for the best fuel economy, the most cargo space, or the newest tech and safety features, certain vehicles excel in some areas or falls behind in others. The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder does not stand out courtesy of any one particular characteristic, but much like the people shopping for it, the Pathfinder is a combination of attributes in one vehicle.

For the 2023 model year, Nissan has introduced the Rock Creek edition. It’s a more rugged version of the Pathfinder. That’s a bit ironic because, like many entrants in this family-hauling segment, the Pathfinder started out decades ago as tough, truck-based SUVs. So while the Pathfinder has evolved into a more comfortable vehicle, the Rock Creek appears to be an attempt to capture the spirit of the early Nissan SUVs. So, how does the Pathfinder stack up within the popular and hotly contested midsize SUV segment? And does the Rock Creek warrant attention as an off-road vehicle?

2024 Lexus TX Reviews Summary

Verdict: Lexus has sold three-row SUVs in the past. But they were either originally engineered for serious off-roading (GX), too expensive (LX), or too cramped for third-row passengers (RX L). The 2024 Lexus TX is none of these things, making it perfect for the typical three-row luxury SUV buyer who spends almost all their time on paved roads. Overall, based on our week testing a TX 350 Luxury model, this new Lexus SUV gets most things right.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

8/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder carried over its design from the 2022 model year, maintaining its modern yet traditional aesthetic. Its futuristic headlights and angular C-pillar gave it a forward-thinking look that was expected to remain relevant for years. Inside, the Pathfinder offered a clean and sensible layout, making it both visually appealing and practical for everyday use. The SUV was available in several trims, including S, SV, SL, Rock Creek, and Platinum, each offering a range of features from basic amenities to luxurious upgrades like leather upholstery and advanced infotainment systems.

In contrast, the 2024 Lexus TX was based on the Toyota Grand Highlander but distinguished itself as a luxury SUV. The TX featured a more conservative design compared to other Lexus models, appealing to those who preferred understated elegance. The Luxury trim, with its 22-inch wheels and premium interior materials, enhanced the vehicle's upscale appearance. The TX offered a spacious and comfortable cabin, with options for heated and ventilated seats, although it lacked some expected features like a massage function. The third-row seating was notably more accommodating than previous Lexus models, providing a practical solution for families needing extra space.

Performance

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

7/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. The Rock Creek variant offered a slight power boost, delivering 295 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Power was managed through a 9-speed automatic transmission, with options for front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Rock Creek model, with its off-road suspension and all-terrain tires, provided enhanced off-road capabilities, although it resulted in a rougher ride on paved roads. The Pathfinder's towing capacity varied, with the Rock Creek capable of towing up to 6,000 pounds, making it a versatile choice for those needing to haul heavy loads.

The 2024 Lexus TX 350 featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Despite initial concerns about its suitability for a midsize SUV, the engine performed adequately for typical driving scenarios. The TX 350 accelerated to 60 mph in approximately eight seconds, with a combined fuel economy rating of 23 mpg for the FWD model. The AWD option, available for an additional cost, provided better traction and slightly improved acceleration. The TX 350's suspension offered a balanced ride, ensuring comfort without sacrificing road feel, while the interior remained quiet at highway speeds.

Form and function

2024 Lexus TX

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder offered up to 80.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded flat. With the second row in use, it provided 45 cubic feet, and with all seats upright, 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space. The first two rows offered ample headroom and legroom, while the third row was suitable for shorter trips. The Pathfinder's interior featured numerous cupholders and storage compartments, enhancing its practicality for families. The Rock Creek model's roof rack was particularly useful, capable of holding up to 220 pounds, although its proximity to the roof made snow removal challenging.

The 2024 Lexus TX addressed previous shortcomings in Lexus's three-row SUVs by offering a more spacious and comfortable interior. The TX 350 Luxury trim included premium materials and features like heated and ventilated seats. The third-row seating was notably more accommodating, with enough space for adults, making it a practical choice for families. The TX provided 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 57.4 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 97 cubic feet with the second row down. The interior featured numerous storage options, although some lacked lining, potentially leading to noise and vibration.

Technology

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder came standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims offered a 9-inch touchscreen, with additional features like wireless device charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot. While the infotainment system was user-friendly, some found the graphics dated. The Pathfinder included multiple USB ports and a six-speaker stereo, ensuring connectivity and entertainment for passengers.

The 2024 Lexus TX featured a 14-inch touchscreen display with the Lexus Interface infotainment system. The optional Technology Package added a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, a head-up display, and a surround-view camera. However, the unmarked steering wheel controls and head-up display visibility issues detracted from the experience. The TX offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a digital assistant and various connectivity features. The optional 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system provided exceptional sound quality, appealing to audiophiles.

Higher trims added advanced features like ProPilot Assist, which included lane centering and adaptive cruise control. The Platinum trim offered additional safety enhancements, including rain-sensing wipers and a head-up display.

The 2024 Lexus TX was equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, offering adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and more. Proactive Drive Assist provided additional braking and steering assistance, although it was not always transparent in operation. The TX also featured blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a safe exit assist system. Optional safety features included parking sensors with automatic braking and traffic jam assist, which allowed for hands-free driving at low speeds on approved highways.
