2023 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

Every car shopper out there has a hierarchy of needs. They put some needs above other needs. Whether you are looking for the best fuel economy, the most cargo space, or the newest tech and safety features, certain vehicles excel in some areas or falls behind in others. The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder does not stand out courtesy of any one particular characteristic, but much like the people shopping for it, the Pathfinder is a combination of attributes in one vehicle.

For the 2023 model year, Nissan has introduced the Rock Creek edition. It’s a more rugged version of the Pathfinder. That’s a bit ironic because, like many entrants in this family-hauling segment, the Pathfinder started out decades ago as tough, truck-based SUVs. So while the Pathfinder has evolved into a more comfortable vehicle, the Rock Creek appears to be an attempt to capture the spirit of the early Nissan SUVs. So, how does the Pathfinder stack up within the popular and hotly contested midsize SUV segment? And does the Rock Creek warrant attention as an off-road vehicle?

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

8/10

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder carried over its design from the 2022 model year, with the exception of the Rock Creek trim level. It featured a blend of futuristic and traditional design elements, such as its distinctive headlights and angular C-pillar, creating a modern yet timeless aesthetic. Inside, the Pathfinder offered a clean and sensible layout, making it both visually appealing and practical for everyday use. The various trims, including S, SV, SL, Rock Creek, and Platinum, provided a range of features from basic to luxurious, catering to different preferences and needs.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80, particularly in the Prestige Signature trim, exuded luxury with its Matterhorn White Matte paint and dark chrome trim. The exterior, while stylish, was somewhat understated compared to the opulent Ultramarine Blue over Dune interior. The cabin was adorned with diamond-stitched Nappa leather, matte-finish wood trim, and metallic accents, emphasizing its status as a luxury SUV. Despite its luxurious appeal, the GV80's exterior design, especially the wheel design, was less striking than expected, making the regular Prestige trim a more attractive option for some.

Performance

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. The Rock Creek variant offered a slight power boost, with 295 hp and 270 lb-ft. Power was transmitted through a 9-speed automatic transmission to either front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The Rock Creek trim, with its off-road suspension and all-terrain tires, provided enhanced off-road capabilities, albeit at the cost of a rougher on-road ride. The Pathfinder's engine was smooth and quiet, but the unique shifter design was a point of contention for some drivers. The vehicle's rotary drive mode dial was user-friendly, offering various modes for different driving conditions. The Pathfinder's towing capacity was impressive, with the Rock Creek capable of towing up to 6,000 pounds.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered two engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 producing 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV80's driving experience was luxurious yet engaging, with swift acceleration and commendable grip from its all-season tires. The adaptive damping suspension and larger front brakes enhanced its performance, though the steering was unremarkable. The GV80's towing capacity matched the Pathfinder's at 6,000 pounds, but its fuel efficiency was less impressive, with observed mileage falling short of EPA estimates.

Form and function

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

9/10

2024 Genesis GV80

5/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder offered up to 80.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded flat. With the second row in use, it provided 45 cubic feet, and with all seats upright, 16.6 cubic feet. The interior was spacious, with ample headroom and legroom in the first two rows, while the third row was suitable for shorter trips. The optional second-row captain’s chairs facilitated access to the third row. The Pathfinder featured numerous storage compartments and cupholders, enhancing its practicality. The Rock Creek's roof rack was robust, though its proximity to the roof posed challenges in snowy conditions.

The 2024 Genesis GV80, particularly in the 3.5T Advanced trim, offered a third-row seat, but the Prestige Signature trim was limited to four passengers due to its luxurious second-row captain’s chairs. The interior featured high-quality materials, including premium leather and a panoramic glass roof. Despite its luxurious appointments, the GV80's seats were less comfortable for long trips, and second-row legroom was limited. Cargo space was generous, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row and up to 84 cubic feet with the seats folded. However, the Prestige Signature's rear center console required careful loading of cargo.

Technology

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder came standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with larger 9-inch screens available on higher trims. The system was user-friendly, though some found the graphics dated. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker stereo. Higher trims added features like a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless device charging, and additional USB ports. While not cutting-edge, the Pathfinder's tech offerings were sufficient for most users.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, though its placement made the control dial more practical for use. The system included navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GV80 introduced a Wi-Fi hotspot for 2024, and wireless smartphone charging was standard. The Prestige Signature added second-row wireless charging. The infotainment system was intuitive, with pleasing graphics and minimal glare. The GV80 also offered a digital key system and a premium sound system, with a head-up display available on higher trims.

Safety

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, collision warning, pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring. Higher trims added ProPilot Assist, front parking sensors, a 360-degree parking monitor, and a head-up display. The Pathfinder's off-road mode provided additional camera views for navigating obstacles.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 boasted advanced safety features, such as a Blind-Spot View Monitor, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Highway Driving Assist. The latter combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centering and lane-change assist, though it was less effective in heavy traffic. The Blind-Spot View Monitor provided video feeds in the digital instrument panel, enhancing safety during lane changes. The GV80's Remote Smart Parking Assist allowed for autonomous parking, even from outside the vehicle. The GV80 received top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, ensuring peace of mind for drivers.
