It may be all-new for 2023, but the GLC's redesign is so conservative, it's hard to tell. Bigger changes can be found inside and the overall upgrades keep it at the top of the small luxury SUV class. The previous-generation GLC Coupe returns unchanged but replacements are in the works.

Look and feel

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class offered a refined look that balanced the new with the classic. Though the GLC 300 was redesigned, its visual updates were subtle. The new, narrower taillights were the most noticeable change. Still, for many, the GLC would appear largely unchanged from the first generation that debuted in 2016. This was both a strength and a limitation; the GLC’s enduring style had clearly stood the test of time, but it lacked the distinctiveness that might have set the new model apart more visibly. Its interior, however, was a modern marvel with a striking vertical infotainment touchscreen and a tablet-like instrument panel, all designed with high-quality materials. In comparison to its peers like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, the GLC's cabin was simpler and cleaner. The GLC Coupe retained its unique roofline but otherwise maintained the cohesive, luxurious feel of the standard model.

On the other hand, the 2023 Volvo XC90 epitomized a significant stylistic evolution for Volvo. Where decades past saw Volvo making boxy, utilitarian vehicles, the XC90 embraced a blend of function and elegance. Its front end was bold yet unobtrusive, complemented by the signature “Thor’s Hammer” headlights that added a modern touch. The XC90’s design retained some rectilinear elements, but the overall aesthetic was far from utilitarian. Our reviewed XC90, sporting Platinum Gray paint, offered a dignified presence, enhanced by 21-inch wheels and low-profile tires. Inside, the XC90 melded luxurious materials with Scandinavian minimalist design. From the two-tone leather steering wheel and Orrefors crystal shift knob to the Nappa leather seats and wood deco inlays, the cabin was a blend of elegance and simplicity.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

6/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

Performance-wise, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class featured the GLC 300, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This setup delivered 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive were standard, with optional 4Matic all-wheel drive. The GLC 300 accelerated smoothly, achieving 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. Though not as spirited as the BMW X3, it provided ample power for highway merging and overtaking. The ride was praised for its comfort, backed by a nearly silent cabin. The returning GLC Coupe, while visually similar, retained its older engine with identical performance stats. The AMG GLC 43 Coupe, with its turbocharged V6 engine producing 385 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, was the sporty choice, hitting 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 offered two new engines: the B5 and B6, both featuring mild-hybrid technology. The B5 used a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder to produce 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The B6, our test vehicle, added a supercharger, resulting in 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. While not full hybrids, these powertrains used a 13-volt starter generator for auxiliary functions, aiding fuel efficiency and smooth operation. The XC90’s driving experience was pleasant and reserved, supported by an eight-speed automatic transmission and less noticeable road noise. Its brakes provided a solid pedal feel, instilling confidence. Despite lighter customization options in terms of driving modes, the XC90 performed admirably in various conditions, including a snowy interstate drive.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

Inside the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, the front seats offered ample adjustments, with firmly cushioned seats ensuring long-distance comfort. The synthetic leather upholstery was convincingly high-quality, with real leather options providing smoother surfaces. Though there were plenty of storage options, the piano black center console lid was prone to showing dust and fingerprints. Taller passengers found the front spacious, and the rear seats offered adequate space, although headroom was slightly limited. Cargo capacity behind the rear seats stood at 21.9 cubic feet, smaller than some rivals. The GLC Coupe, with its sloping roofline, reduced cargo space to 17.6 cubic feet and decreased rear headroom by 1.3 inches.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 provided a serene and elegant front cabin experience, although it lacked ample storage for small items. The center console bin was small, and cubby space was limited, causing potential frustrations for passengers needing quick-access storage. The second row was comfortable but less adjustable, and accessing the third row was inconvenient with the seven-passenger bench seating. However, opting for captain’s chairs reduced seating capacity to six but was a costly upgrade. The third row offered limited space and was challenging to enter and exit. The XC90’s cargo capacity started at 12.5 cubic feet with all seats in place, expanding to 41.8 cubic feet with the third row folded and maxed out at 65.5 cubic feet, less than its competitors.

Technology

In the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, the large 11.9-inch touchscreen was the center of attention. Although visually impactful with sharp graphics and immediate responses, its low placement on the dash made it more distracting. The MBUX infotainment system included a touch pad on the steering wheel, which was overly sensitive. Voice recognition was excellent but could interrupt ongoing media. Standard connectivity featured wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an optional Burmester 3D Surround Sound system for audiophiles. The GLC Coupe, which retained the older layout, had fewer usability issues due to its more traditional setup.

Volvo’s 2023 XC90 featured a 9-inch vertically positioned touchscreen running Google OS, integrating Google Maps, Spotify, and Google Assistant directly. The natural-language recognition system was a highlight, enabling easy communication with Google Home devices. However, many functions were buried within the touchscreen, leading to potential frustrations. While the minimalist design looked elegant, it lacked physical buttons, making tasks like heating the steering wheel or adjusting the driver’s seat overly dependent on the interface. These quirks might become less bothersome over time but could initially hinder an effortless driving experience.

Volvo’s legacy of safety innovation was embodied in the 2023 XC90’s array of driver aids. With a 5-star rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS, its safety pedigree was well-established. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Pilot Assist technology provided a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, ensuring a smooth and secure ride across various conditions. These technologies combined to maintain safe distances and provide gentle steering corrections, enhancing the overall driving confidence.
