The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class showcased a blend of old and new. The GLC 300 model underwent a complete redesign, presenting narrow, sleeker taillights as its most recognizable feature. However, its resemblance to the first-generation GLC from 2016 remained strong, noting that the original model had led the small luxury SUV segment for several years with its timeless elegance. The interior embraced a significant makeover, introducing a large vertical infotainment touchscreen and a clean, high-tech cockpit design that stood in stark contrast to competitors like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Lexus RX. The GLC Coupe models from the previous design cycle held on with their familiar exterior and interior but with a coupe-like roofline and some usability advantages over the new variant. Overall, the GLC-Class retained its traditional luxury aura while other brands inclined towards sportiness and technology.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, however, maintained a reputable profile with proper proportions, chiseled styling, and rugged detailing. Available in S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, it ranged from $27,360 to $37,140, excluding destination charges. The Platinum trim we reviewed included various luxury upgrades like diamond-pattern leather seats and numerous optional features driving its price to $43,100, almost closing in on luxury territory. Despite potential overlap with its luxury sibling, the Infiniti QX50, the Rogue's design and materials set a high standard within the compact SUV segment. It combined aesthetic appeal with significant user-friendly features, crucial for a model that people prefer for its looks as much as its functionality.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class offered limited options initially, predominantly the GLC 300 trim powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It boasted a nine-speed automatic transmission with standard rear-wheel drive, while Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system was available. The acceleration was smooth, almost electric-like, reaching 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. Despite a softer brake pedal, the brakes were effectively responsive and easy to modulate. The suspension favored comfort over sporty handling but still allowed confident cornering. The older GLC 4Matic Coupe retained its turbo engine performance, hitting 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, while the AMG GLC 43 Coupe's turbocharged V6, producing 385 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, provided a more spirited option with rapid acceleration to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue switched to a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with variable compression technology in 2022, producing 201 hp at 5600 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque between 2,800 and 4,000 rpm. Paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters, the Rogue offered front-wheel drive standard and an optional all-wheel-drive system. The new engine felt responsive in urban settings, but highway passing power was lacking. The CVT provided smooth performance, although simulated gear changes felt overly dramatic at times. EPA estimates for fuel economy were 31 mpg combined, though real-world tests averaged around 28.9 mpg. The suspension design, complemented by Intelligent Trace Control and Active Ride Control, provided a balanced and composed driving experience, despite some sensation in lateral and vertical body motion on uneven roads. However, steering feedback remained lackluster.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC’s interior offered comfortable and adjustable front seats, covered in convincing synthetic leather, with real leather as an option. Storage was ample, featuring a large center console bin with a wireless charging pad, although the piano black lid was prone to fingerprints. Rear seating provided adequate space for average adults, with slightly limited headroom for taller passengers. The standard model offered 21.9 cubic feet of cargo space, less than some rivals but adequate for many users. The GLC Coupe sacrificed some practicality with 17.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity and reduced rear headroom by 1.3 inches due to its sloping roofline.

In contrast, the Nissan Rogue's practicality made it a family-friendly replacement for a midsize car. The Rogue could comfortably fit four adults and a fifth when needed, albeit snugly in the back seat. Our Platinum trim test model came equipped with features like triple-zone climate control and a dual-panel panoramic sunroof. The front seats, covered in premium leather and designed for comfort, provided individual heating, although ventilation was absent. The rear doors opened wide for easy access, and the rear seats provided climate control access and charging ports. Cargo capacity excelled with up to 36.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 74.1 cubic feet when folded down, aided by Nissan’s Divide-N-Hide system for multiple configurations.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class incorporated a visually impactful 11.9-inch touchscreen with responsive graphics but a distracting lower dashboard placement. It included a tiny steering wheel-mounted capacitive-touch trackpad for cursor control, though this was overly sensitive. The MBUX infotainment system’s voice recognition was notably efficient but interrupted other media. Standard features encompassed wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the optional Burmester 3D Surround Sound system enhanced audio quality.

The Nissan Rogue used an older infotainment version with an 8-inch standard or an available 9-inch touchscreen highlighted by easy accessibility through stereo volume and tuning knobs. The Platinum trim's 9-inch touchscreen included Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, a navigation system, and a wireless charging pad. Notably, Alexa Built-in was functional but inadequately programmed for varied requests. The Rogue featured a clear 12.3-inch digital instrument display and an effective HUD.
