Although there were eight different versions within a competitive price range, all maintained a consistent level of quality and refinement. The Turbo Signature test model featured upscale appointments such as Rhodium White metallic paint and Caturra Brown Nappa leather, pushing the MSRP to a notable but seemingly justified $41,655.

In contrast, the 2023 Honda Pilot was fully redesigned, bringing a more rugged and substantial appearance to the table. It increased in all dimensions compared to its predecessor, fitting well with the off-road-ready TrailSport model. The new Pilot boasted a more functional interior, meeting the elevated standards of its class while maintaining an attractive, utilitarian aesthetic. Overall, its broader, taller, and longer frame, combined with a smart design focus, made it appealing for both everyday family use and adventure.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine choices, starting with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain was mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel-drive system, achieving an EPA rating of 26 mpg in combined driving. However, the turbocharged version elevated the CX-5’s allure, especially when run on premium fuel. With 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque, it was irresistibly powerful. Even on regular gas, it delivered 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The improved structural rigidity, suspension, and noise reduction efforts made driving the turbocharged CX-5 a rewarding experience.

The 2023 Honda Pilot came with a new 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Pilot offered smooth and refined power delivery. The Pilot’s handling, though modestly sporty, emphasized comfort—suitable for a family SUV. The Pilot's standout feature was the stowable second-row center seat, enhancing accessibility and versatility. The second row offered ample space, while the third row was more suited for short trips. Cargo capacity was substantial, with 22.4 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 60.1 cubic feet with the second row down and maxing out at a whopping 114.3 cubic feet, making it far more spacious than the CX-5.

Mazda’s infotainment system, Mazda Connect, was visually appealing with a 10.25-inch display but fell short in functionality. The absence of an effective voice recognition system and complex control processes made it less user-friendly. Nonetheless, it did offer features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Bose audio system in upper trims. Parking aids and camera systems were additional conveniences in higher models.

The Pilot, notably in the EX-L trim and above, provided a more refined technological experience with a nine-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wireless phone charger. Higher trims featured a multi-view camera system, head-up display, and a navigation system. The infotainment system was user-friendly with quick responses and logical layouts, emphasizing functionality. Features like CabinTalk and a superior Bose audio system rounded out its impressive tech offerings.

Mazda equipped the CX-5 generously with standard driver assistance technologies under the i-Activsense banner. Features exclusive to higher trims included a surround-view camera system, traffic jam assist, and rear low-speed automatic emergency braking. Mazda’s standard safety suite operated well, earning the CX-5 top marks in NHTSA and IIHS assessments, albeit with a noted flaw of operating running lights too brightly at night.

The Honda Pilot also came packed with comprehensive safety features. Standard across all trims were forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, traffic jam assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims added low-speed automatic braking and parking sensors, while the TrailSport and Elite included enhanced camera systems. This array of features worked seamlessly, earning the Pilot a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, and although NHTSA ratings were pending, Honda anticipated high marks.
