2023 BMW X1 Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

Look and feel

2023 BMW X1

8/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2023 BMW X1 felt like a refined evolution of its predecessor. It retained its recognizable X1 identity but with a stronger and more polished appearance. The larger, squarer kidney grille was less startling than the one on the BMW 4 Series, signaling a robust front fascia. The flush door handles, standard LED headlights, and redesigned L-shaped taillights added to its modern look. The color palette expanded significantly, offering 13 exterior choices, including five new dynamic options. The X1 also introduced 20-inch wheels for the first time, available with performance tires. Inside, the cabin felt premium with the BMW Curved Display, SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings, and a panoramic moonroof. The M Sport Package added sportier elements, while the slim floating center armrest and aluminum-finished door handles enhanced the overall design.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a significant departure from Volvo's boxy past. Its purposeful yet understated front end, assertive grille, and modern "Thor’s Hammer" headlights gave it a contemporary flair. The XC90's dimensions remained rectilinear but far from the toaster-like designs of the past. Our test vehicle, an AWD Ultimate trim, featured 21-inch wheels and a Platinum Gray paint with rich undertones. Inside, the XC90 exuded elegance with two-tone leather, metal Bowers and Wilkins speaker covers, an Orrefors crystal shift knob, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist design was complemented by wood deco inlays, creating a clean and beautiful look. However, the lack of physical controls for some functions could be frustrating.

Performance

2023 BMW X1

9/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2023 BMW X1 received a significant power boost with its 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder engine, producing 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This was an increase of 13 horsepower and 37 lb-ft from the previous model, allowing the X1 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and tow up to 3,500 pounds. The new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission replaced the old eight-speed automatic, providing a more engaging driving experience, especially with the M Sport Package's paddle shifters. The upgraded Adaptive M Suspension and damping systems improved comfort and stability, though the ride was a bit stiff. The X1's EPA fuel economy was rated at 25 mpg city, 34 highway, and 28 combined, with Premium fuel recommended.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced new B5 and B6 engines with mild-hybrid technology, replacing the older T5 and T6 engines. The B5 engine, with a turbocharger and 48-volt mild-hybrid system, produced 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The B6 engine, featuring a supercharger and turbo, delivered 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The mild-hybrid system improved fuel efficiency and smoothness, though the gains were minimal. The XC90's eight-speed automatic transmission performed well, and the vehicle handled corners with minimal roll despite its size. The brakes were solid, and road and wind noise were well-insulated. The XC90's driving experience was enjoyable but reserved, with limited customizable driving dynamics.

Form and function

2023 BMW X1

9/10

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2023 BMW X1 offered impressive interior space with 42.1 inches of front headroom and 39.3 inches in the rear, surpassing competitors like the Audi Q3, Lexus UX, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and Volvo XC40. Front-row legroom was 40.4 inches, while the rear offered 37 inches. Cargo space was generous, with 25.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 57.2 cubic feet with them folded. Heated seats were optional, costing $550, but included a heated steering wheel. The wireless charging pad, part of the Premium Package, was cleverly designed to hold the phone securely.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's front seats were comfortable and elegant, but the minimalist design led to limited cubby space. The second row was spacious but challenging to adjust, and accessing the third row was difficult with the standard bench seat. Removing the middle seat for captain’s chairs cost $500 and required upgrading to the B6 engine. Cargo space was 12.5 cubic feet with the third row up, 41.8 cubic feet with it down, and 65.5 cubic feet with all rear seats folded, falling short of competitors like the Audi Q7, Infiniti QX60, Genesis GV80, and Acura MDX. The XC90 drove like a smaller car, but its limited space and access could be frustrating for families.

Technology

2023 BMW X1

2023 Volvo XC90

7/10

The 2023 BMW X1 featured the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8, integrating a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch driver information display. The system was responsive and easy to operate, though cluttered with apps and sub-menus. Voice commands worked well for climate control and the panoramic moonroof, but navigation struggled with verbal inputs. The touchscreen functioned smoothly, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included. The Live Cockpit Plus was standard, while the Premium Package added Live Cockpit Professional with a head-up display and augmented reality navigation. The X1 had four USB-C ports and an optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The start/stop button and toggle-style gear selector were user-friendly, though the parking brake required manual activation in some situations.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display ran on Google OS, integrating Google Maps, Spotify, NPR, and Google Assistant. The 12.3-inch driver information display also featured Google Maps. Natural-language recognition was excellent, and owners could issue commands via Google Home devices. However, many functions were buried within the touchscreen interface, leading to frustration. The minimalist design lacked physical buttons for some controls, requiring screen interaction for tasks like adjusting the driver’s seat or turning on the heated steering wheel. While these issues might fade with long-term use, they could be annoying during a test drive.

Safety

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

9/10

The 2023 BMW X1 came standard with active blind-spot detection, including an exit warning function. The front-collision warning system included pedestrian and cyclist detection with brake intervention. The optional Active Driving Assistant Professional suite offered speed limit assist, extended traffic-jam assistant, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with stop & go. A 360-degree camera system was available in the Premium Package. Active Park Distance Control and Back-Up Assistant were also available, helping with parking and reversing.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 was renowned for its safety, carrying a five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Pilot Assist technology, which maintained distance from the car ahead and helped with lane-keeping. These features made the XC90 a compelling choice for safety-conscious buyers.
