2023 Acura Integra Reviews Summary

Keeping the liftback body style, the 2023 Integra looks to cash in on two decades of nostalgia as Acura moves away from the lukewarm ILX sedan. In our testing, the Integra proved to be more than lip-service for patient fans. This sharp-shifting, turbocharged sport compact delivers plenty of smiles.

2023 MINI Cooper Reviews Summary

You either join the MINI camp or shake your head “no.” There has never been a middle ground with a MINI. That’s the point—to drive a fun-looking, fun-to-drive small car that’s unlike anything else in the neighborhood. For 2023, the MINI Cooper offers a limited-run Resolute Edition and a few new paint colors. We tested a two-door Hardtop John Cooper Works (JCW) while participating in a rally with more than 700 MINI owners. Maybe next time you’ll join them with your new MINI.

Look and feel

2023 Acura Integra

7/10

2023 MINI Cooper

8/10

The 2023 Acura Integra showcased a cohesive design language that aligned seamlessly with Acura's larger models like the TLX sedan and the RDX and MDX crossovers. With its pentagonal grille, JewelEye headlights, and sharply creased character lines, the Integra presented a modern and unified aesthetic. The five-door liftback design, a nod to the third-generation Integra, added a unique touch, while the wide track and long wheelbase gave it a solid, planted look. The interior, though sharing some similarities with the Honda Civic, maintained a distinct Acura feel with high-quality finishes and a logical layout.

In contrast, the 2023 MINI Cooper stood out with its unique and playful design, available as a two-door hatchback, four-door hatch, or two-door convertible. The third-generation model, larger than its predecessors, retained the iconic MINI look with its short, squat body and bug-eyed appearance. The interior featured Chesterfield leather seats and a giant circular touchscreen on the dash, resembling a ship's porthole. The design was both whimsical and functional, with toggle switches and a manual gear shifter adding to the charm. The MINI Cooper's exterior and interior design elements combined to create a distinctive and engaging driving experience.

Performance

2023 Acura Integra

9/10

2023 MINI Cooper

7/10

The 2023 Acura Integra introduced a turbocharged engine for the first time, featuring a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder that produced 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. This engine, shared with the Honda Civic Si, offered lively performance, especially when paired with the six-speed manual transmission available on the A-Spec with Technology trim. The manual transmission included automatic rev-matching technology, making downshifting smooth and effortless. The Integra's handling was impressive, with a firm suspension, wide track, and long wheelbase providing a sporty yet comfortable ride. The variable-ratio electric power-steering system adjusted the steering feel based on the wheel's position, enhancing both highway stability and cornering sharpness. The Integra also featured three drive modes—Comfort, Normal, and Sport—plus an individual mode for personalized settings.

The 2023 MINI Cooper JCW, the quickest Cooper model, boasted a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine, shared with BMW's FWD models, delivered smooth and strong performance with minimal turbo lag. The six-speed manual transmission had an abrupt clutch take-up, making it ideal for teaching manual driving but challenging for smooth launches. The JCW's handling was enjoyable, with a stiff suspension and adaptive dampers providing flat cornering. However, the steering felt a bit delayed, detracting from the promised "go-kart" experience. The JCW's fuel economy was lower than expected for a small car, but the power and performance made up for it. The electric MINI Cooper SE offered 114 miles of range, maintaining similar output to the gasoline Cooper S.

Form and function

2023 Acura Integra

7/10

2023 MINI Cooper

6/10

The 2023 Acura Integra's liftback design enhanced its practicality, offering 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. However, the high lift-over height made loading heavy or bulky items challenging. The front seats provided ample space and comfort, with a logical dashboard layout and smartly placed storage options. Rear passengers had decent legroom, but headroom was limited due to the steeply sloped roofline. The rear seat cushions were soft, adding to passenger comfort.

The 2023 MINI Cooper's outward visibility was good, and the front seats offered plenty of legroom and headroom. The two-door model's rear bench and cargo hold were cramped, with just nine cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 34 cubic feet with the seats folded. The four-door model offered slightly more cargo space, with 13 cubic feet expanding to 41 cubic feet. The convertible model had only eight cubic feet of cargo space but featured a tailgate that folded down for easier access. The convertible's roof rails allowed the fabric section to slide back like a sunroof, enhancing the open-air experience. The MINI's instrument panel had a matte finish to reduce glare, but the central display was harder to read. The infotainment system combined a touchscreen with console buttons, though the buttons were inconveniently placed.

Technology

2023 Acura Integra

9/10

2023 MINI Cooper

6/10

The 2023 Acura Integra came standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. The Technology package added a 9-inch color touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and a head-up display. The top-tier trim also included additional USB ports and the ELS Studio 3D premium audio system with 16 speakers, providing an exceptional audio experience. The base and A-Spec models offered sufficient technology, but the A-Spec with Technology trim elevated the Integra's tech offerings to a higher level.

The 2023 MINI Cooper featured an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay (but not Android Auto), SiriusXM satellite radio, connected apps, LED headlights, Union Jack-patterned taillights, rain-sensing wipers, and manual seats as standard. The Cooper S models in Signature trim added a panoramic moonroof and heated leatherette seats. The Iconic trim offered navigation, automatic parking, wireless phone charging, and a head-up display, though the latter was a pop-up piece of plastic and not very effective. The infotainment system used older BMW iDrive software, lacking the advanced features found in newer BMW models. However, the MINI Cooper included unique features like the Openometer and playful sounds and chimes.

Safety

2023 Acura Integra

9/10

2023 MINI Cooper

6/10

The 2023 Acura Integra set a high standard for safety equipment, offering a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as standard across all trim levels. These included automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keeping assist, traffic jam assist, traffic sign recognition, a rear-seat reminder, hill-start assist, and automatic brake hold. The A-Spec with Technology trim added low-speed braking control, front and rear parking sensors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the Integra five out of five stars overall in its crash tests.

The 2023 MINI Cooper came standard with eight airbags, rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. However, it lacked blind-spot monitoring and other advanced safety features available in similarly priced cars. Adaptive cruise control was available on certain versions with the automatic transmission. The NHTSA had not rated the MINI Cooper, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) last published safety ratings for the 2014 model, which was structurally identical to the 2023 MINI Cooper, giving it the highest "good" rating in five out of six crash tests.
