2022 MINI Cooper Reviews Summary

MINI characterizes its lineup as the “definitive” premium small cars in the United States market. Based on a BMW platform, equipped with BMW engines, and featuring BMW technology, MINIs can substantiate this claim through engineering. But it’s the range of choices and personalization options that make them unlike any other premium small cars.

Naturally, this is true of the refreshed 2022 MINI Convertible, which is available in Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works (JCW) specification and with Classic, Signature, or Iconic trim. Once you’ve made those decisions, you can select from a wide variety of colors, materials, wheels, packages, and options to make your MINI your own. Or you can choose a pre-packaged special edition like our Sidewalk Edition test car.

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid Reviews Summary

You’d think that Toyota would celebrate the Camry’s 40th anniversary in the United States market with a special edition commemorating the milestone. Maybe that’s still to come. But for now, you’ll need to settle for a 2023 Toyota Camry Nightshade Edition sporting spiffy bronze wheels and a beautiful new paint color called Reservoir Blue. The Nightshade Edition is offered with SE trim and your choice between a standard or a hybrid powertrain. There aren’t any other changes to the 2023 Camry, for now.

Look and feel
2022 MINI Cooper
7/10
2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid
5/10

The 2022 MINI Cooper, refreshed for the model year, retained its iconic charm with restyled bumpers, a new grille, and standard LED headlights. The car's playful personality was evident in its design, featuring Union Jack taillights and new paint colors like Island Blue and Zesty Yellow. Inside, the MINI Convertible combined retro aesthetics with modern technology, including a new steering wheel and an 8.8-inch touchscreen display. However, the car's form-over-function approach resulted in a cluttered interior, and its awkward proportions were accentuated by the new grille.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid, particularly in the Nightshade Edition, offered a more subdued yet modern look. The Nightshade Edition featured matte-bronze 19-inch wheels, black-trimmed headlights and taillights, and a TRD mesh grille. Available in colors like Reservoir Blue, Ice Cap, and Midnight Black, the Camry Hybrid's exterior was both stylish and practical. Inside, the SE-spec interior, though not luxurious, was functional and comfortable, with durable materials and a straightforward layout. However, the use of cheap-looking plastic and the presence of road noise detracted from the overall experience.

Performance
2022 MINI Cooper
4/10
2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid
5/10

The 2022 MINI Cooper offered a range of engines, starting with a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine producing 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This engine took over eight seconds to reach 60 mph. For more spirited driving, the Cooper S featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 189 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque, achieving 60 mph in under seven seconds. The JCW models, with a tuned version of the Cooper S engine, delivered 235 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque, reaching 60 mph in just over six seconds. Despite its sporty nature, the MINI's steering response and brake pedal feel were disappointing, and the car's tires struggled with aggressive cornering.

The 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid, on the other hand, combined a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing a net power output of 208 horsepower. The hybrid system simulated a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and offered Normal, Eco, EV, and Sport driving modes. Despite its focus on fuel economy, the Camry Hybrid's real-world fuel efficiency fell short of the EPA rating, averaging only 33.4 mpg. However, the hybrid powertrain provided quick acceleration from a stop, and the regenerative braking system offered better-than-expected brake pedal feel. The Camry Hybrid SE Nightshade's sport suspension tuning delivered predictable handling, though the stability control system was overly sensitive.

Form and function
2022 MINI Cooper
4/10
2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid
4/10

The 2022 MINI Cooper Convertible prioritized form over function, with comfortable front seats but essentially useless rear seats. The trunk offered just 5.2 cubic feet of space, accessible through a bottom-hinged lid. Interior storage was limited, and the infotainment system's controls were hard to reach. While the MINI's small size was expected, it was clear that the Convertible was not designed for practicality.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid excelled in simplicity and functionality. The interior featured durable materials and a straightforward layout, with dual-zone automatic climate control and available heated and ventilated front seats. The front seats were comfortable and adjustable, while the rear seats, though not as spacious as those in a Honda Accord, were adequate. The Camry's trunk offered 15.1 cubic feet of space, enough for full-size suitcases. However, the lack of a handle to close the trunk lid was a minor inconvenience.

Technology

The 2022 MINI Cooper introduced a new MINI Connected infotainment system with an 8.8-inch touchscreen display. The system offered Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa integration, and SiriusXM satellite radio, with navigation, wireless smartphone charging, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system available as options. The digital instrument cluster and head-up display were useful, though the screens could wash out in direct sunlight. The Harman Kardon sound system impressed with its ability to overcome ambient noise.

The 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid came with either a 7-inch or a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, both offering Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility. The larger system included connected navigation and a 9-speaker JBL premium sound system. The test car had the basic 7-inch screen, which was functional but lacked advanced features. The physical knobs and buttons were easy to use, though the knobs could have been more prominent. Additional tech included an available 7-inch driver information center and a 10-inch head-up display.

Safety
2022 MINI Cooper
3/10
2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid
7/10

The 2022 MINI Cooper Convertible benefited from its increased size, offering better protection in collisions. However, it lacked crash-test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS. Standard safety features included forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control was optional, but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were not available, which was a drawback given the car's visibility challenges.

The 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid came with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder system, and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 (TSS 2.5), which included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and adaptive cruise control. The Camry earned five-star ratings from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, though it received a Poor rating in the updated side-impact crash test. TSS 2.5's performance was not as refined as expected, with overly sensitive lane-keeping systems and abrupt adaptive cruise control.
