2022 Honda Civic Reviews Summary

According to Honda, 75 percent of Civic owners return in the future to buy another one of the company’s vehicles. That represents a significant opportunity, and it makes the redesigned 2022 Honda Civic sedan crucial to the automaker’s long-term health. With so much riding on this car’s success, we’re happy to report that Honda nailed the redesign, engineering, and technology with few exceptions. And that makes the 2022 Civic sedan one of the best compact cars you can buy.

2023 MINI Cooper Reviews Summary

You either join the MINI camp or shake your head “no.” There has never been a middle ground with a MINI. That’s the point—to drive a fun-looking, fun-to-drive small car that’s unlike anything else in the neighborhood. For 2023, the MINI Cooper offers a limited-run Resolute Edition and a few new paint colors. We tested a two-door Hardtop John Cooper Works (JCW) while participating in a rally with more than 700 MINI owners. Maybe next time you’ll join them with your new MINI.

2022 Honda Civic

9/10

2023 MINI Cooper

8/10

The 2022 Honda Civic embraced a familiar range of trims: LX, Sport, EX, and Touring, with prices starting at $21,700 and reaching up to $28,300, excluding a $995 destination charge. Honda also reintroduced a five-door hatchback variant later in the year. The test models' prices varied, with a Civic Touring in Morning Mist Blue costing $29,690 and a Civic Sport, adorned with Platinum White Pearl paint and the HPD package, estimated under $25,880.

With its redesign, the 2022 Civic reflected a more conservative, tailored look akin to its larger sibling, the Accord. This 11th-generation model appeared more mature and subdued compared to previous iterations, appealing to those who favored understatement over flair. The interior design aimed for simplicity, with a refreshing metal honeycomb mesh across the dashboard elegantly concealing air vents, and improved material quality evident throughout, especially on the Touring trim.

In contrast, the 2023 MINI Cooper offered a unique and playful visual experience. Available as a two-door hatchback, four-door hatch, or convertible, the MINI retained its iconic bug-eyed bulldog stance. Its design, larger than the original 2002 model but still compact, distinguished it from others in its class. The two-door Cooper, in particular, offered a vivid presentation with gradient paint effects, stripes, and multicolored roofs, which made it look like a life-size toy. The Cooper JCW version, with its Chesterfield leather seats, diamond-patterned stitching, and supportive seating, imbued the cabin with sporty elegance, while the toggle switches and round central display added a whimsical touch.

Performance

2022 Honda Civic

9/10

2023 MINI Cooper

7/10

The 2022 Honda Civic provided two distinct engine options. The entry-level LX and Sport trims came with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The EX and Touring trims featured a more powerful turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, offering a more engaging driving experience. Both engines were paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), featuring Step Shift programming to mimic traditional automatic transmissions. Additionally, the Civic's sport-tuned suspension, improved structural rigidity, and refined steering made for a spirited yet composed drive. However, the fuel economy of the Touring trim fell short of the EPA estimate, scoring just 30.4 mpg on a 95-mile loop compared to the expected 34 mpg.

The 2023 MINI Cooper's performance varied by trim, with the range-topping JCW model showcasing a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine delivering 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine also found a home in BMW's X1 and X2 models, ensuring a refined and potent powertrain. The clutch in the six-speed manual transmission, while ideal for teaching novices, required mastering for smooth launches. The JCW also featured a Sport mode offering rev-matching on downshifts, complemented by an engaging eight-speed automatic option. Base Cooper models housed a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three with 134 horsepower, and Cooper S variants had a detuned version of the JCW's engine with 189 horsepower. While these configurations offered commendable fuel efficiency, especially the three-cylinder variant, handling in the JCW trim couldn't match the agility MINI advertised, with a beat-or-two delay in steering responsiveness and firm ride quality.

Form and function

2022 Honda Civic

8/10

2023 MINI Cooper

6/10

Comfort was a highlight for the 2022 Honda Civic, particularly in the redesigned front seats, which offered enhanced support. The Touring trim's power driver's seat allowed for precise adjustments, while the passenger seat provided exceptional thigh support despite its non-adjustable height. Rear-seat legroom was generous, though the Civic's low stance posed challenges for entry and exit. The rear lacked air conditioning vents and heated cushions in the Touring trim, a notable drawback. The trunk capacity was practical, offering 14.8 cubic feet in standard models and 14.4 cubes in the Touring due to its premium sound system. The trunk could accommodate full-size suitcases, and a split-folding backseat added versatility.

The 2023 MINI Cooper, true to its name, offered compact dimensions. The two-door model's rear bench and cargo space were limited to nine cubic feet, which expanded to 34 cubic feet with seats folded. The four-door variants offered slightly more at 13 cubic feet, growing to 41 cubic feet. Convertible models had mere eight cubic feet of cargo space but featured an innovative tailgate and adjustable rear seat backs for loading ease. The convertible also offered a sunroof-like experience with its sliding fabric roof. The infotainment system, highlighted by a porthole-encased touchscreen with a unique lighting ring, provided a playful yet practical interaction. However, the placement of certain controls and the difficulty in reading the matte-finished instrument panel detracted slightly from the otherwise engaging interior experience.

Technology

Embarking on a tech upgrade, the 2022 Honda Civic integrated digital instrumentation with a 10-inch display in the Touring trim, offering personalized layout options and vital driving data visualization. Innovations like the Vehicle Activity display ensured drivers remained aware of their lighting status. The standard infotainment system featured a 7-inch touchscreen with physical knobs, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims boasted a 9-inch display with enhancements like wireless connectivity for smartphones, wireless charging, and superior audio from a 12-speaker Bose system.

Conversely, the 2023 MINI Cooper came standard with an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay (excluding Android Auto), SiriusXM satellite radio, and other essential electronics like Union Jack-patterned taillights and rain-sensing wipers. Cooper S versions in the Signature trim introduced a panoramic moonroof and heated leatherette seats, while the top Iconic trim offered options for navigation, automatic parking, wireless charging, and a subpar head-up display. MINI's infotainment system, derived from older BMW iDrive software, featured some engaging MINI-specific gimmicks, like the animated Openometer, but lagged behind in terms of contemporary BMW interface sophistication.

Safety

2022 Honda Civic

7/10

2023 MINI Cooper

6/10

The 2022 Honda Civic excelled in safety, thanks to an upgraded Honda Sensing suite comprising adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, Lane Keeping Assist, and Traffic Jam Assist. Enhanced by a new wide-view front camera and ultrasonic sensors, these systems operated with smooth accuracy. The Civic EX and Touring trims further included a proper blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, replacing the less effective LaneWatch system. Structural improvements and new airbag designs provided increased protection, supplemented by a standard rear-seat reminder for extra security.

The 2023 MINI Cooper came equipped with eight airbags, including front knee airbags, rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. However, it lacked advanced features like blind-spot monitoring and did not offer semi-automated driving assistance, with adaptive cruise control available only on specific trims. The absence of NHTSA ratings for the 2023 model and reliance on older IIHS ratings from 2014 somewhat clouded the MINI's safety assurance.
