Pricing for the Atlas spanned from $34,355 to $51,505, plus a $1,195 destination charge, with our test vehicle—the SEL Premium R-Line—coming in at $53,790. This model boasted Aurora Red paint and second-row captain's chairs. Noteworthy in the Atlas SEL Premium were the 21-inch wheels with a machined finish, which complemented the SUV’s bold, boxy design. However, other wheel options failed to match its aesthetic appeal. The interior, while well-designed with a premium feel, relied heavily on cost-effective materials. Hard, shiny plastics detracted from the overall experience and suggested a lack of refinement, especially in an SUV nearing a $54,000 price point. Conversely, the 2023 Honda Pilot underwent a complete redesign for a more rugged and substantial look. Its larger dimensions—3.4 inches longer, up to 1.5 inches wider, and 0.8 inches taller—exaggerated its newfound bulk. The Pilot's all-terrain-capable TrailSport trim underscored these changes with off-road enhancements like a taller ride height, unique wheels, all-terrain tires, and skid plates strong enough to support the vehicle's entire weight. Inside, the redesigned Pilot favored functional and versatile aesthetics over the interior design flair seen in other Honda models. Materials quality met the competitive standards of the class. The functional design, complemented by clever storage options, was especially appreciated. The new Pilot emphasized practical utility without sacrificing visual appeal, making it a preferred choice over its predecessor.

Despite its bulk, the Atlas's squared-off hood and comprehensive camera and sensor systems made it easy to maneuver and park. The ride quality felt somewhat improved over previous models, though it retained a taut, busy response to surface imperfections. Off-road incursions and snow performance remained untested in our review. The 2023 Honda Pilot introduced an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine generating 285 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The engine was paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission, enhancing acceleration responsiveness and overall drivability. The standard drive layout was front-wheel drive, with AWD available across the lineup and standard on the Elite and TrailSport trims. Initial acceleration was quick, and power delivery was smooth and adequate. The Pilot excelled in comfort-focused tuning, offering feather-light steering that aided in tight-space maneuverability but felt vague at highway speeds. The TrailSport trim added off-road capability with an increased ground clearance and all-terrain tires, handling rougher trails with ease while barely sacrificing on-road composure. Overall, the Pilot's performance reflected a balance of adequate power and exceptional comfort, making it ideal for family-oriented driving with occasional off-road adventures.

Equipped with a seven-inch or nine-inch infotainment touchscreen depending on trim, higher trims like the EX-L added wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wireless charger. The Elite trim boasted a head-up display and a fully digital instrument panel. The Pilot's entry-level trims included clever storage solutions and logical control placements, enhancing usability. In terms of seat versatility, the Pilot introduced a stowable second-row center seat, providing a practical pass-through for third-row passengers. The second-row seat could be tucked under the cargo floor when not in use. Seating in the second row was generous for tall adults, though the third row lagged in thigh support, making it suitable only for shorter trips. Cargo space ranged from 22.4 cubic feet behind the third row to a remarkable 114.3 cubic feet with all rear seats folded flat, highlighting the Pilot's utility advantage over rivals.

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas came with the VW Digital Cockpit standard across all trims. Lower trims featured a basic 6.5-inch touchscreen, while others upgraded to an 8-inch screen with the latest MIB3 infotainment system. Higher trims included a multi-view camera system and Honda's CabinTalk, enhancing convenience and safety. The top trims also featured navigation, a Bose premium audio system, remote vehicle monitoring, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
