2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Reviews Summary

Following a substantial refresh for the 2021 model year, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup sees few changes. The most significant of them is the cancelation of AMG E63 and E63 S variants. Reportedly due to supply chain problems, V8 engines are being dropped from much of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz lineup. That leaves the E-Class with turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder power plants.

Additionally, automatic high-beam headlights are standard on all 2022 E-Class models, and a couple of paint colors are new. With the coupe and convertible body styles, rear USB charging ports are now standard equipment.

2023 Acura TLX Reviews Summary

Have you got a high-schooler in your household? When your child was born, the third-generation Acura TL was the second best-selling luxury car in the US, right behind the BMW 3 Series. Today, its descendant, the Acura TLX, is less popular than the comparatively rare BMW 2 Series. How did this happen? Chalk it up to poor design decisions. From “the beak” on the fourth-gen TL to the rapid technological aging of the first-gen TLX, Acura squandered opportunity in the midsize luxury sports sedan segment. And now that consumers have mostly switched to SUVs, there simply aren’t many people buying cars like the 2023 Acura TLX.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

9/10

2023 Acura TLX

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was a versatile offering, available in coupe, convertible, sedan, and station wagon body styles, a variety unmatched by most competitors. The E-Class sedans, designated as E350, featured a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while all variants could be upgraded to the E450, which boasted a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology. Rear-wheel drive was standard, with 4Matic all-wheel drive as an option. For those seeking performance, the AMG-tuned E-Class models, like the AMG E53, offered a more powerful engine. The E-Class consistently ranked high in reviews, though it struggled with cost-effectiveness. The AMG E53 Cabriolet, with its luxurious features and striking design, exemplified the brand's commitment to luxury, despite its hefty price tag.

In contrast, the 2023 Acura TLX faced challenges due to the consumer shift to SUVs and supply chain constraints. The TLX, redesigned in 2021, was a rare sight on the road, even in car-centric Southern California. The TLX Type S, with its striking Tiger Eye Pearl paint and performance upgrades, was priced at $59,100. The TLX's design, inspired by a concept vehicle, emphasized a long, low, and lean profile, though it compromised rear-seat room and cargo space. Inside, the TLX featured a layered dashboard design, but its control layout required a learning curve. The Type S model, with its turbocharged V6 engine and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, was the most expensive TLX variant, offering a blend of performance and style.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

8/10

2023 Acura TLX

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 was equipped with a 3.0-liter turbo-six engine featuring EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology, producing 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. This engine delivered robust performance across a wide rev range, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. The AMG Speedshift nine-speed automatic transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system enhanced the driving experience, offering multiple driving modes through AMG Dynamic Select. The E53 Cabriolet's AMG-tuned air suspension and performance exhaust system, along with optional 20-inch wheels, provided a dynamic yet comfortable ride. The convertible excelled as both a luxurious cruiser and a spirited performer, adapting to various driving conditions with ease.

The 2023 Acura TLX offered a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The TLX's Integrated Dynamics System allowed drivers to choose from multiple driving modes, with the Type S adding a Sport+ mode. The Type S model featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque, along with performance enhancements like adaptive dampers and Brembo brakes. The Type S accelerated to 60 mph in five seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph. While the TLX Type S delivered an engaging driving experience, its brake-by-wire system occasionally detracted from the overall performance.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

8/10

2023 Acura TLX

4/10

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 Cabriolet was a true four-passenger convertible, offering comfort for both front and rear passengers. The Aircap system reduced cabin turbulence, while heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and the Airscarf neck-warming system enhanced comfort. The triple-layer acoustic soft top provided insulation from heat and noise. The E53's multi-contour front seats with massage and Air Balance fragrance system added to the luxurious experience. However, the trunk space was limited to 9.5 cubic feet with the top up, and even less with the top down.

The 2023 Acura TLX Type S featured a premium interior with Milano leather and carbon fiber trim. The front sport seats offered 16-way power adjustments, heating, and ventilation, while the rear seats were less accommodating due to limited legroom. The TLX's trunk provided 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to a compact car. The TLX's design prioritized style over practicality, resulting in a visually appealing but less spacious interior.

Technology

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

9/10

2023 Acura TLX

4/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class excelled in digital instrumentation and infotainment with its MBUX system. Two 12.3-inch screens provided high-resolution displays, and the system offered multiple interaction methods, including touch, voice, and steering wheel controls. Features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an augmented reality navigation system enhanced usability. The Burmester surround-sound audio system delivered exceptional sound quality. While MBUX was comprehensive, it required acclimation to navigate its extensive menu structure.

The 2023 Acura TLX's True Touchpad Interface (TTI) was a source of frustration for users. The 10.2-inch display was not touch-sensitive, relying on a touchpad and buttons for control. The TTI's one-to-one relationship with the screen proved distracting, and the system occupied valuable console space. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and AcuraLink connected services, with upgrades available for wireless charging and premium audio. The TLX lacked Alexa Built-In, relying on AcuraLink Remote for Alexa compatibility. While the ELS Studio 3D audio system impressed, the overall infotainment experience was hindered by the TTI.

Safety

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

10/10

2023 Acura TLX

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class came with standard safety features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The Cabriolet included pop-up rollbars for rollover protection. Mercedes Pre Safe and Pre Safe Sound prepared occupants for collisions, while Active Parking Assist and a surround-view camera aided parking. Additional safety features were available in the Driver Assistance Package, which included adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. The package's driver aids, particularly adaptive cruise control and Active Steering Assist, were highly effective.

The 2023 Acura TLX featured AcuraWatch, which included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. The Type S added rain-sensing wipers and a wiper de-icer system. The TLX's Advanced Engineering Compatibility body structure and eight airbags contributed to safety. The TLX received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. While AcuraWatch generally performed well, it occasionally issued false warnings and struggled with lane-keeping in certain lighting conditions.
