2023 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

Look and feel

2022 Lexus NX

7/10

2023 Toyota RAV4

8/10

When the redesigned 2022 Lexus NX entered the market in December 2021, it offered a range of four model series: NX 250, NX 350, NX 350h, and NX 450h+. The NX differentiated itself with finely detailed styling, unmistakable with the signature spindle grille and new block lettering on the tailgate. The NX had longer, wider, and taller proportions compared to its predecessor, providing increased passenger and cargo space. The interior design of the NX aimed for a minimalist approach with most functions integrated into a 14-inch touchscreen. However, this simplification might have gone too far, as users found it challenging to locate and use some features quickly. The NX 350 F Sport model included sport-bolstered seats, a black headliner, and distinct interior trims, giving it a sporty edge over other trims.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 maintained much of its design from the 2019 model, with six trim levels offering various pricing and features. The Adventure trim stood out with a more aggressive grille, blacked-out wheels, and faux skid plates, but these touches were more for show than actual off-road capability. Inside, the Adventure trim added orange accents and a relatively basic center console with orange plastic borders. The RAV4 provided a mix of trim options from the base LE to the more premium Limited, offering choices for all sorts of buyers. The interior, while functional, did not quite match the luxury feel of the NX but was practical with wisely arranged storage and seating features.

Performance

2022 Lexus NX

7/10

2023 Toyota RAV4

7/10

In the performance department, the 2022 Lexus NX offered two electrified versions: the 239 hp NX 350h hybrid and the 302 hp NX 450h+ PHEV. The top-of-the-line NX 450h+ could deliver an estimated 36 miles of pure electric range before switching to gas-electric operation. The NX 350 came powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, delivered by an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine gave a solid, enjoyable drive, especially in the F Sport trim, which included adaptive variable sports suspension and performance dampers. The NX 250, with its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, seemed less exciting with 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The NX 350 had a more rewarding powertrain and a measured 0-60 mph time of around 6.6 seconds.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 came standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While it lacked the turbocharged excitement and quick acceleration found in the NX 350, it presented a reliable, if a bit noisy, performance. AWD versions added a Snow Mode, enhancing capability in winter conditions, while hybrids such as the RAV4 Prime had their advancements. The RAV4 Adventure trim offered a MacPherson independent front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, but its 19-inch wheels wrapped in all-season tires reiterated its inability to match true off-road vehicles in capability.

Form and function

2022 Lexus NX

8/10

2023 Toyota RAV4

8/10

Lexus claimed that the 2022 NX provided more interior space, yet from the driver’s seat, it felt cozy and intimate rather than spacious. The interior aimed for comfort with options such as heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and bolstered seats in the F Sport model. Rear passengers enjoyed roomy accommodations, air conditioning vents, and optional heated seats. The NX offered a panoramic glass sunroof stretching over the back seat. Cargo capacity was slightly improved, with 22.7 cubic feet available behind the rear seats and 46.9 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

Comparatively, the 2023 RAV4 could seat five passengers comfortably, though its headroom and legroom measurements were mixed when stacked against competitors like the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. Headroom was 37.7 inches in the front and 39.5 inches in the back, while legroom measured 41 inches in the front and 37.8 inches in the second row. Storage options for front passengers included a glove compartment shelf, large door pockets, and side-by-side cupholders. In terms of cargo space, the RAV4 offered 37.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a generous 69.8 cubic feet with the seats folded down, surpassing the Lexus NX in storage capacity but falling behind other class leaders.

Technology

2022 Lexus NX

2023 Toyota RAV4

8/10

Lexus's approach to technology in the 2022 NX marked a significant leap, especially with the new Lexus Interface infotainment system. The touchscreen options (standard 9.8-inch and optional 14-inch) paired with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, natural voice recognition, and cloud-based features. The shift away from the detested Remote Touch Interface was a welcome change. High-quality systems such as a 10-speaker standard sound system or an available 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround system provided excellent audio experiences. However, issues arose with fingerprints on the touchscreen and the absence of a tuning knob.

The 2023 RAV4's new infotainment system featured an 8.0-inch standard touchscreen, with a 10.5-inch upgrade available for selected trims. This setup supported OTA updates, wireless smartphone integration, and voice commands. Our RAV4 Adventure model included these features at an additional cost, alongside an 11-speaker JBL Premium audio system, providing a satisfying multimedia experience. A standard 7-inch driver-information display, upgradable to a 12.3-inch in higher trims, further enhanced functionality.

Safety

2022 Lexus NX

10/10

2023 Toyota RAV4

9/10

When it came to safety, the 2022 Lexus NX was fully equipped with the latest in driver assistance and collision avoidance technologies, including the comprehensive Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 (LSS+ 3.0). Features like Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist, Oncoming Vehicle Detection, and Oncoming Pedestrian Detection set new safety benchmarks. Additional standard tech included blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist among others. Premium trim levels offered even more safety features such as rear pedestrian detection and adaptive front lighting.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 also came well-prepared safety-wise, with standard features including lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic emergency braking, high-beam LED headlights, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. The new TSS 2.5 suite equipped the RAV4 with Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The 2023 RAV4 earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, indicating robust safety performance in crash tests and high marks overall.
