2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

2022 Cadillac Escalade Reviews Summary

Over roughly two decades in production, the Cadillac Escalade has become the General Motors luxury brand’s de facto flagship. It may share underpinnings with more pedestrian SUVs and pickup trucks from other GM brands, but the Escalade sits at the top of the Cadillac hierarchy in price, size, and—thanks to Cadillac’s constant reshuffling of its other nameplates—name recognition. It’s also an established player in a robust niche of big luxury SUVs.

The Escalade’s competitive set splits into two camps: other truck-like body-on-frame SUVs (Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX80, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Lexus LX) and upscale unibody SUVs (BMW X7, Land Rover Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class). It’s a good time to be shopping for a full-size luxury SUV, in other words.

Cadillac has one of the freshest entries in this group. The Escalade was redesigned for the 2021 model year, adding a number of notable features like a 38-inch OLED display screen and GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system.

Changes for this generation’s sophomore model year are minor. A Buckle to Drive feature that forces the driver to buckle their seatbelt before setting off is now standard, lane-keep assist and lane-departure warning are now standard on the base Escalade Luxury trim level, and Premium Luxury Platinum and Sport Platinum models gets standard puddle lamps. Cadillac also added three extra-cost colors: Mahogany Metallic, Galactic Gray Metallic, and Wilder Metallic.

The Escalade is available in standard-wheelbase and long-wheelbase Escalade ESV body styles (the latter will be covered in a separate review), with the option of gasoline or diesel engines and five trim levels: Luxury, Premium Luxury, Sport, Premium Luxury Platinum, and Sport Platinum. We hoisted ourselves into a standard-length Premium Luxury diesel model for this review.

Look and feel

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

2022 Cadillac Escalade

6/10

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover underwent a subtle evolution rather than a complete redesign. Its front and side profiles closely resembled the previous generation, with a broad, rounded face and expansive sheet metal. A notable change was the vertical accent strip under the mirrors, replacing the old L-shaped trim. The rear saw the most significant update, with thin LED strips replacing the square taillights, enhancing its imposing presence. Inside, the Range Rover featured a simplified design with fewer buttons, a larger touchscreen, and premium materials, offering a refined luxury experience that surpassed many competitors.

In contrast, the 2022 Cadillac Escalade made a bold statement with its unapologetically massive size. Its front end, reminiscent of a diesel locomotive, featured a tall hood and vertical running lights. The Escalade's design emphasized its bulk, with 22-inch wheels appearing small against its vast sheet metal. The interior, while luxurious with leather and wood trim, lacked a cohesive design theme. Despite some cheap-looking plastic bits, the Escalade offered a spacious cabin, especially in the extended ESV version, making it a cargo-hauling champion.

Performance

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

2022 Cadillac Escalade

6/10

The 2022 Range Rover offered two powertrains: a base P400 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, and an upgraded P530 with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. Both engines paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD. The P400 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, impressive for its nearly 6,000-pound weight. The Range Rover excelled in agility, with well-managed body roll and standard rear-wheel steering enhancing maneuverability. Its off-road capability was notable, supported by the Terrain Response system, while maintaining a smooth, quiet ride.

The 2022 Escalade offered a standard 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, and an optional 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft. Both engines used a 10-speed automatic transmission with RWD or optional 4WD. The diesel engine impressed with smooth power delivery and low torque peak, though the brake pedal felt hard. The Escalade's towing capacity reached 8,200 pounds with the gasoline engine. However, its ride was unsettled, with body-on-frame construction and 22-inch wheels contributing to a less luxurious feel compared to unibody rivals.

Form and function

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

2022 Cadillac Escalade

8/10

The 2022 Range Rover provided ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats offered long-distance comfort with massage functions, while the second row accommodated taller passengers with power adjustments. The optional third row was less spacious but suitable for smaller passengers. Cargo space was limited to 17.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 93 cubic feet with seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable air suspension added convenience for loading.

The 2022 Escalade shared its platform with other GM SUVs, resulting in a cavernous cabin. It offered the most first-row and third-row legroom among full-size luxury SUVs. Cargo space was generous, with 25.5 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 109.1 cubic feet with seats folded. However, the raised center console limited storage space, and front seats, though adjustable, felt similar to those in GM cousins. Cadillac included useful features like dedicated buttons for seat heating and ventilation.

Technology

The 2022 Range Rover featured a new 13-inch touchscreen with the Pivi Pro infotainment system, offering sharp graphics and quick responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, complemented by a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system delivered impressive sound quality, with an optional 35-speaker upgrade. Additional tech included Amazon Alexa integration, remote parking, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 2022 Escalade boasted a 38-inch curved OLED display, comprising three screens. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, with physical toggles for climate control. The display integrated well into the dashboard, though the radio station carousel was awkward to use. The Escalade's 360-degree camera system and rearview camera mirror enhanced visibility. Additional features included night vision, augmented-reality navigation, and a 19-speaker AKG Studio sound system.

Safety

2022 Cadillac Escalade

The 2022 Range Rover came standard with features like frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a surround-view camera system. These features performed well, though some advanced options found in rivals were absent. No crash test ratings were available from NHTSA or IIHS.

The 2022 Escalade included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keep assist. Super Cruise, a sophisticated driver-assist system, was available on most trims, offering hands-free driving on pre-mapped highways. While the system impressed with smooth responses, no crash test ratings were available from NHTSA or IIHS.
