2022 Honda Odyssey Reviews Summary

If you are a minivan aficionado like we are, then you know that the 2022 Honda Odyssey is the most enjoyable one to drive. It has that light, effortless, responsive driving character that Honda bakes into every one of its cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans. But you also know that the Odyssey’s rivals are successfully outflanking it in terms of stylish design, all-weather capability, electrified efficiency, infotainment technology, and outright luxury.

In response to these new threats, Honda makes no changes to the 2022 Odyssey. Good thing its “original recipe” approach remains pretty tasty.

2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2022 Honda Odyssey

7/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey was a minivan that catered to families with its practical design and thoughtful features. Its sliding side doors made it easy to load children into car seats, even in tight parking spaces. The Odyssey offered a comfortable third-row seat, making it ideal for family outings or carpools, and provided ample cargo space when the seats were folded down. Despite its utilitarian nature, the Odyssey managed to incorporate a sense of style, particularly in the Elite trim with its dark gray 19-inch aluminum wheels and kinked sliding doors that added character to its clean design.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication and elegance with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille. This midsize SUV featured a stately presence, enhanced by its matte Brunswick Green paint and 22-inch alloy wheels on the Prestige trim. Inside, the GV80 continued the theme of luxury with quilted leather seats, metal and matte wood trim, and a unique two-spoke steering wheel. While the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed somewhat out of place, the overall interior was spacious and luxurious, offering a comfortable and refined driving experience.

Performance

2022 Honda Odyssey

7/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It was a front-wheel-drive vehicle, lacking the all-wheel-drive and hybrid options available in some competitors. The Odyssey delivered an EPA fuel economy estimate of 22 mpg in combined driving. While it wasn't designed for spirited driving, the Odyssey handled daily commutes with ease, offering quick acceleration and responsive handling. However, its brakes tended to heat up on long descents, leading to pedal vibration and noise.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and a turbo 3.5-liter V6 producing 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and came with all-wheel drive. The GV80 wasn't particularly nimble, taking about five and a half seconds to reach 60 mph, but it excelled in highway driving. Its smooth power delivery, electronically controlled suspension, and active noise cancellation made for a quiet and comfortable ride, although it lacked the athleticism of some German rivals.

Form and function

2022 Honda Odyssey

8/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey offered easy access with wide-opening doors and a low ride height. Inside, the Odyssey Elite featured quality leather seats with power adjustments, heating, and ventilation, along with a tri-zone climate control system. Storage was abundant, with various compartments and a handy floor tray. The Magic Slide second-row seats allowed for flexible configurations, and the third-row seat provided ample comfort for adults. With 32.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and up to 144.9 cubic feet with the seats removed, the Odyssey was a practical choice for families.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 compensated for its lack of driving excitement with luxurious features. Heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats, a tri-zone climate control system, and a 21-speaker stereo system were highlights. The GV80 offered a third-row option, though legroom was limited. Cargo space was generous, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 84 cubic feet with the seats folded. The GV80 also boasted a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, adding to its versatility.

Technology

2022 Honda Odyssey

5/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey Elite was equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims added navigation, CabinWatch, and CabinTalk features. However, the infotainment system felt outdated, with a small screen and limited voice command functionality. The rear-seat entertainment system was basic, and the overall technology package needed an upgrade.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. While the infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, the system included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though not wirelessly. The GV80 also offered remote smart parking assist, allowing the vehicle to park itself without the driver inside. Despite some usability challenges, the GV80's technology package was comprehensive and advanced.

Safety

2022 Honda Odyssey

8/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Honda Odyssey came standard with Honda Sensing, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. However, the system lacked refinement, sometimes issuing false warnings or responding abruptly. The Odyssey received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was equipped with a suite of advanced driver aids, including forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. It featured a video feed of the blind spot in the digital gauge cluster and Highway Drive Assist for hands-on/eyes-up driving. The GV80 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and high marks from the IIHS, though its headlights and LATCH system were rated as Acceptable.
