2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

2022 Hyundai Palisade Reviews Summary

This three-row crossover SUV sports a 3.8-liter V6 engine with direct gasoline injection, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD). The Palisade starts at $33,600 with FWD and $35,300 with AWD.

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2022 Hyundai Palisade

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 boasted a distinctive design that set it apart from its siblings in the Genesis lineup. It featured the brand's signature quad LED strips for headlights and taillights, along with a prominent shield-shaped grille. The GV70's sloping roofline and ribbed detailing added a touch of athleticism to its SUV bulk, creating a blend of ruggedness and sleekness. The Sport Prestige model further enhanced its character with unique styling elements, including a model-specific front fascia, 21-inch wheels with a web pattern, and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70's interior was inspired by the cross-section of an airplane's wing, with an elliptical theme that extended to the controls and door handles. The design was minimalistic, with a perched touchscreen and hidden air vents, while a rotary gear selector and infotainment controller added a touch of sophistication. The interior offered a range of color options and luxurious materials, with Nappa leather upholstery and suede seat inserts in the Sport Prestige model.

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade, as Hyundai's flagship SUV, presented an elegant and striking exterior design. It shed any past criticisms of derivative styling with its distinctive lines, prominent grille, and sculpted wheel arches. The continuous strip of glass surfaces around the tailgate created a floating rear roof effect, while expressive LED headlights and taillights added to its visual appeal. Inside, the Palisade's interior was equally polished, featuring a horizontally arrayed screen and a beefy center console. High-quality materials adorned every surface, and the second row offered either a roomy bench or captain's chairs, with a spacious third row for additional passengers. The Palisade's fit and finish were near-luxury levels, and the top-of-the-line Calligraphy model was particularly stunning with its Steel Graphite paint and black interior combination.

Performance

2022 Genesis GV70

7/10

2022 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two engine options: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a more powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The GV70 also featured a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty character. The Sport+ drive mode further enhanced its performance, holding high revs and sharpening throttle response. However, the GV70's chassis felt heavy, lacking the sharpness of some competitors, and the steering was not as precise for spirited driving. While it excelled on highways, the ride was firm, and it didn't quite match the luxury driving experience expected from a true luxury vehicle.

In contrast, the 2022 Hyundai Palisade came with a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This engine, with gasoline direct injection and dual variable valve timing, offered a smooth and responsive driving experience without turbo lag. The Palisade's V6 engine note added a pleasant baritone rumble. While its fuel efficiency was not class-leading, the Palisade's power and handling were commendable. It featured a four-wheel independent suspension and stabilizer bars, providing a comfortable ride. The Palisade's towing capacity reached up to 5,000 pounds with trailer brakes, making it a practical choice for families.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2022 Hyundai Palisade

8/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered mid-pack interior space for its segment. Despite its car-like roofline, it provided adequate front-seat headroom comparable to a Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and back-seat headroom similar to a BMW X3. Cargo space measured 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded, placing it in the middle ground of its class. The interior design, while daring, compromised storage space, with limited room in the center console and door pockets. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered, offering heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions, though some controls were buried in touchscreen menus.

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade excelled in interior space and functionality. It provided comfortable seating in the third row, with easy access and cupholders on each side. The second-row captain's chairs were exceptionally comfortable, and the available bench seat offered ample legroom and headroom. The front row featured abundant storage, including compartments in the center console and door panel bottle holders. Luggage space measured 18.0 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 45.8 cubic feet with the third row folded, and a cavernous 86.4 cubic feet with both rows down. The Palisade's gear selector used a compact shift-by-wire setup, and controls were logically arranged. A dual-panel sunroof on higher trims enhanced the cabin's ambiance, while luxury features like rain-sensing wipers and premium Nappa leather upholstery added to its appeal.

Technology

2022 Hyundai Palisade

The 2022 Genesis GV70 impressed with its tech offerings. It featured a standard 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The tile-based layout and crisp graphics made it user-friendly, while the glass rotary controller added functionality. Higher trims offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 3D effect and a 12-inch head-up display. The GV70 also included a digital-key feature, allowing smartphone use in place of a key fob, and a fingerprint scanner for starting the car. Its advanced rear-seat monitor used radar to detect a baby's breathing, and the 360-degree camera system could be activated remotely through an app. Genesis Connected Services provided additional features like driver profiles and valet mode.

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade showcased Hyundai's technological prowess. The standard display audio system on lower trims featured an 800 x 480 resolution screen, while higher trims boasted a 1920 x 720 color touchscreen with a 630-watt Harman Kardon premium audio system. The infotainment system included wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, and satellite radio. Multiple USB ports and a Qi wireless charging pad ensured connectivity, while a rear-view monitor with parking guidance was standard. Hyundai's Blue Link connected car system offered remote engine start and vehicle monitoring. Higher trims featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with turn signal integration and blind-spot monitor cameras.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, blind-spot and forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-attention monitor. It also featured Highway Driving Assist, which added automated lane centering to adaptive cruise control. The GV70 included eight standard airbags, including a front-center airbag. Optional features included Highway Driving Assist 2 with lane-change functionality and navigation-based adaptive cruise control. However, crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available for the GV70.

The 2022 Hyundai Palisade boasted an impressive array of safety features. It included seven airbags, three-point seat belts, LATCH anchors, active head restraints, and a front crumple zone. Standard active safety features encompassed anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, blind-spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, and forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection. The Palisade also offered adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and safe exit assist. It earned the highest safety ratings, being a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and receiving five stars from the NHTSA.
