2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs 2023 Lincoln Aviator

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was more than just a pretty face, though its appealing design certainly added to its charm. Chevrolet nailed the proportions, character lines, and intricate details, with the option of a black- or white-painted roof enhancing its allure. Even in its base L trim, the Trailblazer managed to look impressive, which was quite a feat. The small SUV offered five trims: L, LS, LT, Activ, and RS, with prices ranging from $20,195 to $26,695, plus a $1,195 destination charge. Our test vehicle, an RS trim with AWD, started at $28,195, but options pushed the price to $33,000, which seemed excessive given the hard plastic interior. Despite its stylish cabin, the Trailblazer's interior materials didn't justify the high price tag.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator, on the other hand, was a midsize SUV that exuded luxury and sophistication. It featured a modern Lincoln face that was arguably the most successful in the automaker’s lineup. The Aviator offered a choice between a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and a plug-in hybrid powertrain, with prices ranging from $53,340 to $89,280, excluding a $1,195 destination charge. Our test model, the Black Label Grand Touring, was fully loaded and priced at $91,225. While the Aviator's exterior design was generally appealing, the wheel designs on our test model were too plain for a vehicle of its price. The Aviator's interior was undeniably luxurious, with high-end materials and a plethora of features, though some chrome detailing and stitching fell short of expectations. The cabin's Art Deco style might not appeal to everyone, but it was certainly a feast for the eyes.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was equipped with turbocharged three-cylinder engines, offering a choice between a 1.2-liter engine with 137 horsepower and a 1.3-liter engine with 155 horsepower. The latter provided 174 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm, making the Trailblazer feel lively. A CVT was standard with FWD, while AWD models received a nine-speed automatic transmission and a more sophisticated rear suspension. The RS trim featured 18-inch aluminum wheels and all-season tires, contributing to its nimble and fun-to-drive nature. However, the Trailblazer was loud on freeways, and its suspension struggled with speed bumps. Off-road, the Trailblazer required caution to avoid damage. Despite its small engine, the Trailblazer averaged 26.1 mpg in combined driving, slightly below the EPA rating of 28 mpg.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, a plug-in hybrid, delivered an impressive 494 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque. It offered 21 miles of electric range and averaged 23 mpg in hybrid mode. The Aviator featured multiple driving modes, including Pure EV and Preserve EV, to optimize efficiency. During testing, the Aviator achieved 163.4 mpg equivalent by relying heavily on electric power. The twin-turbo V6 provided ample power, though the drivetrain's responsiveness was inconsistent. The Aviator's brake pedal also exhibited typical regenerative braking behavior. The SUV's Dynamic Handling Package and adaptive suspension managed its weight well, offering a smooth and quiet ride. However, the Aviator's steering was heavy and numb, making it less engaging to drive.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite its small size, offered impressive functionality. It could accommodate four people comfortably, with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat in the RS trim. The rear seat, though roomy, was flat and uncomfortable for long journeys. The Trailblazer's cargo space was generous, with 25.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54.4 cubic feet with them folded. The front passenger seat also folded flat, allowing the SUV to carry items up to 8.5 feet long.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator prioritized comfort, featuring a four-zone climate control system, heated and ventilated seats, and massaging 30-way Perfect Position front seats. The second-row captain’s chairs were spacious and separated by a center console. However, the third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access, making it unsuitable for adults. With the third row in use, the Aviator offered 18.3 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 41.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. Maximum cargo capacity was 77.7 cubic feet.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer came with a comprehensive infotainment system, featuring a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Our test vehicle had the larger screen, Alexa Built-in, and a 7-speaker Bose audio system. The system was user-friendly, with physical controls for easy navigation. Additional tech included a keyless entry keypad and optional wireless charging.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Black Label Grand Touring was loaded with technology, including a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa integration. However, it ran on the outdated Sync 3 software, which struggled with voice recognition. The Aviator featured a 28-speaker Revel Ultima 3D audio system and smartphone-related tech like wireless charging and Phone As A Key. The digital instrumentation and head-up display were effective, and parking sensors and a surround-view camera aided in parking.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer prioritized safety with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder, and Teen Driver technology. Chevy Safety Assist was standard, offering forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more. Optional features included blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control. The Trailblazer earned top crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator featured Co-Pilot360 driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. Our test model had additional features like blind-spot monitoring and evasive steering assist. The driver aids performed well on highways but struggled in dense traffic. The Aviator's steering wheel controls were unnecessarily complicated. The standard Aviator received a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA, though the Grand Touring model was not rated.
