2022 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

Since its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only United States manufacturing facility. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that.

Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Although the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup, updates to the remaining models include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

Once ridiculed and now increasing in popularity at an alarming rate, the SUV coupe, a vehicle type originated by BMW and copied by others to varying degrees of success, is taking over the gated suburban enclaves of America. From Acura (remember the ZDX?) to Volvo (C40 Recharge coming right up), automakers are trying the concept on for size, and it doesn’t always fit. However, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe, a low-roofed version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class SUV, is one recipe that works.

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 BMW X3 was available in four variants: sDrive30i, xDrive30i, M40i, and M. The sDrive30i was the only rear-wheel-drive model, while the others featured all-wheel drive. For 2022, the X3 received a subtle yet aggressive exterior redesign. The kidney grille was larger but not overly so, and a black sensor bar between the grilles added a unique touch. The adaptive full LED headlights were slimmer, and the front bumper was redesigned to include new vertical air intakes. The rear featured new taillights with a black surround and claw-shaped brake light LEDs, along with larger exhaust tips and a new bumper. The X3 also offered an M Sport Package and new paint options, including Brooklyn Grey and Tanzanite Blue II.

Inside, the 2022 X3 had a clean and efficient design. While not as flashy as some competitors, it was still handsome with dark oak wood trim, an anthracite headliner, and eight-way power-adjustable front Sport seats. The interior featured new perforated SensaTec synthetic leather upholstery, with premium Vernasca leather available as an option. A panoramic moonroof was standard on the M40i and optional on other models. The X3 offered various interior color choices and ambient lighting with 11 color combinations, making it a comfortable and customizable space.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe had a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. It featured EQ Boost, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that added extra power and helped conserve fuel. The EPA estimated a combined fuel economy of 19 mpg, but our test vehicle achieved 18.5 mpg. The GLE 53 Coupe had a SpeedShift nine-speed automatic transmission and an AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system with fully variable torque distribution. It also offered multiple driving modes, an AMG sport exhaust system, and an AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active roll stabilization.

In urban settings, the GLE Coupe's speed-sensitive variable-ratio power steering made it easy to maneuver, and the turning radius was tighter than expected. However, the optional AMG Performance braking system made smooth stops challenging. The AMG Active Ride Control suspension handled speed humps well but was less forgiving on rougher roads. Overall, the GLE Coupe felt nimble and composed in various driving conditions. In Sport+ mode, it excelled on winding roads, while Sport mode provided a more balanced and enjoyable driving experience.
