2021 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

Look around on the road today, and you are bound to see SUVs of all shapes and sizes. From three-row family haulers to subcompact runabouts. There is an SUV for nearly every need and every budget. The 2021 Toyota Sequoia might feel like it's from an earlier wave of the SUV craze, and that’s because it is. Born out of the 1990s SUV-excess-fest, the Sequoia has evolved into a niche vehicle for those who need serious space and truck-like capability.

The current generation of the Sequoia has been around for almost 15 years, and while Toyota has updated it in several ways, there’s no avoiding its age. Even with modern tech and safety features, this is still an aging beast. Can such a dated vehicle still be relevant in the modern car market? And is age really that important to buyers who are looking for tons of space and standard V8 power? Read on to find out.

2022 Ford Expedition Reviews Summary

Certain cars garner a surprising amount of attention. While driving a 2022 Ford Expedition Limited in Stone Blue Metallic with one of the Stealth Edition option packages, we received numerous compliments on this SUV, and it was all related to the paint color and the wheels. Fortunately for Ford, the 2022 Expedition’s beauty is more than skin deep. This is a terrific full-size SUV in all ways but one.

2021 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

2022 Ford Expedition

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia, despite its age, retained a robust and imposing presence. Introduced in 2007, the second-generation Sequoia received a facelift in 2018, which included updated headlights and grille, along with some new tech. For 2021, the Sequoia added a Nightshade Special Edition, but otherwise, changes were minimal. The subtle updates to the exterior were often overshadowed by the vehicle's large silhouette. Inside, the Sequoia's design felt dated, with a massive, multi-tiered center dash reminiscent of the mid-2000s. The standard 7-inch touchscreen appeared small against the expansive dashboard, and while the cabin offered ample space, the front seats were bulky, limiting headroom for taller drivers. However, the second-row seats provided generous headroom and legroom, and all seats were comfortable and supportive.

In contrast, the 2022 Ford Expedition underwent significant updates, including exterior styling revisions and enhanced infotainment technology. The front featured a new grille, headlights, and bumper, while the rear received revised taillights and a new bumper. Redesigned wheels were introduced across the lineup. The Expedition offered a range of trims, including the new Timberline trim for off-road enthusiasts. Inside, the Expedition boasted a redesigned dashboard with Ford's Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems, featuring a large 15.5-inch touchscreen. The cabin was spacious and comfortable, with power-adjustable, leather-wrapped, heated, and ventilated front seats. The second-row captain's chairs provided ample legroom, and the third-row seat offered power recline and storage trays. The Expedition's cargo space was generous, with 104.6 cubic feet available with both rear rows folded.

Performance

2021 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

2022 Ford Expedition

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia was equipped with a standard 5.7-liter V8 engine, producing 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. This engine was paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, offering either rear-wheel drive or optional four-wheel drive. Despite its weight of up to 6,000 pounds, the Sequoia delivered stout acceleration. However, the six-speed transmission, while providing a sense of power, impacted fuel economy. The Sequoia's driving dynamics resembled those of a truck, with a soft suspension and strong brakes. It could tow up to 7,400 pounds, falling behind competitors like the Ford Expedition, which could tow up to 9,300 pounds.

The 2022 Ford Expedition featured a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, producing 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. With the Stealth Edition Performance Package, it could achieve 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The V6 engine was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, offering rear-wheel drive or optional four-wheel drive. The Expedition's fuel economy ranged from 17 to 19 mpg in combined driving, with observed fuel economy at 16.2 mpg. The Expedition excelled in towing, with a capacity of up to 9,300 pounds. Its driving dynamics were impressive, with a sport-tuned suspension and excellent handling. The Expedition was easy to park, thanks to its visibility and parking sensors, and it shone on the highway with its comfortable cabin and smooth ride.

2022 Ford Expedition

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia offered a spacious cabin with nearly 19 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and 120 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. While the Sequoia's front-row space could have been better utilized, it featured deep in-door pockets, a massive center console, and multiple cupholders. The Sequoia's power-retractable rear window was a unique feature, allowing easy access to the cargo area without fully opening the hatch.

The 2022 Ford Expedition provided exceptional comfort and space, with power running boards for easy entry and exit. The cabin featured power-adjustable, leather-wrapped, heated, and ventilated front seats, along with a heated steering wheel. The second-row captain's chairs offered ample legroom and climate controls, while the third-row seat provided power recline and storage trays. The Expedition's cargo space measured 19.3 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 104.6 cubic feet with both rear rows folded. The Expedition Max offered even more cargo space, with 121.5 cubic feet available.

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia came standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and a WiFi hotspot. The system was user-friendly, with simple menus and large hard buttons. However, the digital trip computer was small compared to modern digital instrument panels.

The 2022 Ford Expedition featured Ford's next-generation Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems. The standard Sync 4 system included a 12-inch touchscreen, while Sync 4A offered a larger 15.5-inch touchscreen. Both systems included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, FordPass Connect, and a connected navigation system. Sync 4A added features like SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, and a choice of Bang & Olufsen premium sound systems. The Expedition also offered a dual-touchscreen rear-seat entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV.

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia was equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense-P suite, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. It also featured blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front-and-rear parking sensors. However, it lacked more advanced tech like lane-keeping assist and scored four out of five stars in the NHTSA's rollover test.

The 2022 Ford Expedition offered a comprehensive suite of safety features through Ford Co-Pilot360 packages. The standard package included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Higher trims added features like adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, intersection assist, and evasive steering assist. The Expedition also offered BlueCruise hands-free driving technology and a rear automatic emergency braking system.
