2022 Ford Expedition Reviews Summary

Certain cars garner a surprising amount of attention. While driving a 2022 Ford Expedition Limited in Stone Blue Metallic with one of the Stealth Edition option packages, we received numerous compliments on this SUV, and it was all related to the paint color and the wheels. Fortunately for Ford, the 2022 Expedition’s beauty is more than skin deep. This is a terrific full-size SUV in all ways but one.

2023 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

Benefactor of a long-overdue redesign, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is an improved full-size SUV in every way except for the full-size SUV part of the equation. Though the 2023 Sequoia is about the same size as the outgoing model on the outside, it shrinks on the inside to make room underneath the cabin for a standard hybrid powertrain. As a result, the third-row seat is best reserved for kids, and cargo space is on par with midsize crossovers such as the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas rather than full-size rivals like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Jeep Wagoneer.

2022 Ford Expedition

9/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition underwent significant updates, featuring exterior styling revisions and enhanced infotainment technology. The front of the vehicle showcased a new grille, headlights, and bumper, while the rear was updated with revised taillights, tailgate trim, and a new bumper. Redesigned wheels were introduced across the model lineup, adding to the refreshed look. The Expedition was available in various trims, including the new Timberline trim, which catered to off-road enthusiasts with features like standard four-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, and suspension modifications. Inside, the Expedition boasted a redesigned dashboard with the new Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems, offering a large 15.5-inch touchscreen display in the latter. The test model, a Limited Stealth Edition, came with leather seats, a 12.4-inch digital instrumentation display, and a host of options, bringing its MSRP to $80,155.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia presented a bold new design, drawing inspiration from the Toyota Tundra pickup truck. Its distinctively redesigned body gave it a more commanding presence compared to its predecessor. Inside, the Sequoia shared many elements with the Tundra, featuring an industrial theme with upscale materials in the Capstone trim. The Capstone's interior was luxurious, with a 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system and a two-tone color scheme. The Sequoia lineup included trims like SR5, Limited, Platinum, and TRD Pro, with prices starting at $59,895 for the base SR5 and reaching $79,895 for the Capstone with 4WD. The TRD Pro trim offered enhanced off-road capabilities, while the SR5 and Limited trims could be equipped with a TRD Off-Road Package. The Capstone test vehicle featured 4WD, premium paint, and a rear air suspension, with an MSRP of $81,365.

Performance

2022 Ford Expedition

7/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition was powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, delivering 380 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 470 pound-feet of torque at 2,250 rpm. The engine was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, driving the rear wheels unless 4WD was selected. Fuel economy ranged from 17 to 19 mpg in combined driving, with a towing capacity between 9,000 and 9,300 pounds. The Expedition's powertrain provided an addictive driving experience, with a signature sound that was pleasing despite its thirst for fuel. The test vehicle's observed fuel economy was 16.2 mpg, slightly below the official EPA rating. The Expedition's driving dynamics were generally impressive, though the Stealth Edition's sport-tuned suspension could have benefited from the adaptive damping suspension found in higher trims. The SUV's large wheels contributed to a sometimes harsh ride, but its excellent visibility and parking aids made it surprisingly easy to maneuver in urban settings. On the highway, the Expedition excelled, offering a comfortable and quiet ride ideal for long road trips.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia featured a hybrid powertrain, combining a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine with a 36-kilowatt electric motor/generator and a 1.87 kilowatt-hour nickel-metal hydride battery pack. This setup produced 437 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 583 pound-feet of torque at 2,400 rpm. The Sequoia's towing capacity increased to 9,520 pounds, and its payload capacity improved to 1,730 pounds. Fuel efficiency also saw gains, with EPA ratings of 20 mpg for 4WD and 22 mpg for RWD. The test vehicle averaged 17.8 mpg on a mountainous evaluation loop. The Sequoia's driving modes included Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport+, with a Custom mode for personalized settings. The adaptive rear air suspension adjusted ride and handling traits based on the selected mode. While the Sequoia's ride quality was generally busy and occasionally jittery, it performed better on smooth surfaces. The steering was slow, and the regenerative braking system felt unresponsive at times, but the overall driving experience was enhanced by the hybrid powertrain's robust power and torque.

Form and function

2022 Ford Expedition

9/10

2023 Toyota Sequoia

2/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition excelled in providing comfort and space, with easy access thanks to available power running boards. The interior offered ample room for passengers, with power-adjustable, leather-wrapped, heated, and ventilated front seats. The second-row captain's chairs provided plenty of legroom, though toe room was slightly tight. The third-row seat was easy to access and offered outstanding leg support, though headroom could be tight for taller passengers. Cargo space behind the third row measured 19.3 cubic feet, expandable to 57.5 cubic feet with the third row folded. The Expedition Max variant offered even more cargo capacity, with 34.3 cubic feet behind the third row and 121.5 cubic feet with both rear rows folded.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia was best suited for open roads, with a comfortable cabin featuring soft leather upholstery, a JBL premium sound system, and a triple-zone climate control system. The Sequoia's power-deploying running boards aided entry and exit, though taller passengers might find them unnecessary. The second-row captain's chairs were comfortable but did not slide, limiting third-row legroom. The third-row seat was less comfortable than rivals, with limited thigh support and legroom. Cargo space was compromised by the hybrid powertrain, with just 11.5 cubic feet behind the third row, expandable to 22.3 cubic feet. The Sequoia's maximum cargo capacity was 86.9 cubic feet, significantly less than its predecessor and competitors.

The 2022 Ford Expedition featured the next-generation Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems. The standard Sync 4 system included a 12-inch touchscreen, while the optional Sync 4A offered a larger 15.5-inch display. Both systems supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with additional features like SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, and wireless smartphone charging available on higher trims. The Sync 4A system included an upgraded voice-recognition system and an adaptive dashcard user interface. The Expedition also offered a dual-touchscreen rear-seat entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV. Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0 was available for easier trailer reversing.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia came with a new Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen on the base SR5 trim and a 14-inch display on higher trims. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with connected services for user accounts and an Intelligent Assistant for voice commands. The Capstone trim included a 10-inch head-up display and a surround-view camera system. The Sequoia's parking sensors and automatic rear braking system enhanced safety during reversing maneuvers.

Safety

The 2022 Ford Expedition offered a range of safety features through the Ford Co-Pilot360 collections. The standard package included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and more. The Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package added adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, and new features like intersection assist and evasive steering assist. The Co-Pilot Assist 2.0 package, standard on higher trims, included a surround-view camera system and rear automatic emergency braking. Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving technology was also available.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia came standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, which included forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and more. Additional features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist systems were effective, though the lane-departure warning system's beeping could be irritating. Crash test ratings were not available at the time of review, but the Sequoia's platform-mate, the Tundra, received high marks from the IIHS.
