2021 Toyota RAV4 Reviews SummarySince its launch in 1997, the Toyota RAV4 has ridden a wave of crossover SUV popularity to become one of Toyota’s bestselling models. Introduced for the 2019 model year, the current-generation RAV4 tries to offer the rugged style of a traditional SUV, but underneath it’s still a car-based crossover pitched against the likes of the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, and Volkswagen Tiguan. Because it’s only in its third model year, this fifth-generation RAV4 doesn’t get many updates for 2021. The biggest news is the addition of the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid to the lineup, but that model actually went on sale last year. The only other changes are a new XLE Premium trim level for the RAV4 Hybrid, and a new front stainless steel front skid plate for the gasoline RAV4 TRD Off-Road model. Toyota offers compact SUV buyers more choices than most competitors. The RAV4 LE, XLE, XLE Premium, and Limited trim levels are available with hybrid and non-hybrid powertrains. Toyota also offers the gasoline-only RAV4 Adventure and TRD Off-Road trim levels, plus the RAV4 Hybrid XSE. The RAV4 Prime is also available in two trim levels—SE and XSE. We’ve covered the RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime in separate reviews, so this review will focus on the gasoline RAV4. Our test car was a RAV4 TRD Off-Road, which joined the lineup for the 2020 model year and is the first RAV4 model tuned by Toyota Racing Development, the automaker’s North American performance division.
2022 BMW X3 Reviews SummarySince its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only United States manufacturing facility. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that. Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Although the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup, updates to the remaining models include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features.

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 presented a rugged exterior reminiscent of a traditional SUV, with boxy fender flares, chiseled taillights, and a scowling front end that set it apart from previous generations and most compact crossovers. Despite its aggressive styling, the RAV4 was built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, shared with other Toyota models, which meant its mechanical underpinnings were more akin to a Camry than a 4Runner. The RAV4 offered options like the Adventure model with a retro Ice Edge roof and the TRD Off-Road with matte black wheels and red interior accents, enhancing its adventurous appeal. Inside, the RAV4 featured rugged styling touches, such as large rubberized knobs and door handles, but material quality did not significantly improve with higher trims.
The 2022 BMW X3, available in four variants, showcased a slightly revised exterior design with a larger kidney grille and slimmer adaptive full LED headlights. The rear featured new taillights with a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs, along with larger exhaust tips and a redesigned bumper. The X3 offered an M Sport Package for enhanced aerodynamics and sportier aesthetics, while the M40i variant added more M-specific elements like a high-gloss black grille and aerodynamic mirrors. Inside, the X3 boasted a clean and efficient design with dark oak wood trim, power-adjustable front Sport seats, and a panoramic moonroof. The interior offered various color options and ambient lighting, providing a comfortable and customizable environment.

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 was powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It offered standard front-wheel drive with optional all-wheel drive. While the engine achieved impressive thermal efficiency, the transmission's hesitancy and lack of steering feel detracted from the driving experience. The RAV4 excelled in off-road capability with models like the Adventure and TRD Off-Road, featuring a torque-vectoring rear axle and 8.6 inches of ground clearance. However, its on-road dynamics were less refined, making the RAV4 Hybrid or Prime more appealing for those seeking better performance and fuel economy.
The 2022 BMW X3 featured an eight-speed automatic transmission across all models, with the sDrive30i and xDrive30i powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The X3 M40i variant offered a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, enhanced by a mild-hybrid system. The X3 provided a balanced driving experience, with the M40i offering a more exhilarating ride thanks to its additional power and sport-tuned features. Despite the mild-hybrid system, fuel economy remained a concern, with the X3 M40i achieving 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 offered a tall, upright roof providing ample headroom and good visibility, though legroom was slightly lacking. The front seats were comfortable, but the rear seats were less so, with flat cushions. Cargo space was above average at 37.6 cubic feet, though not class-leading. The interior featured oversized knobs and easy-to-use controls, but storage space was limited, with smaller cupholders and a larger shift lever.
The 2022 BMW X3 provided seating for five, with a 40/20/40-split rear seat offering flexibility for cargo and passengers. The X3's cargo area was spacious, accommodating multiple bags and equipment. The SensaTec seats were comfortable, with the Vernasca leather option adding softness. The X3's interior featured improved ergonomics, with a redesigned center console and larger infotainment screen. The vehicle offered numerous adjustability options, though the thigh-support cushion control could be intrusive for some drivers.
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 came standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Most trims featured a 7-inch touchscreen, with higher trims offering an 8-inch screen. The infotainment system was user-friendly but lacked advanced features like a head-up display, available only on the RAV4 Prime.
The 2022 BMW X3 featured BMW Live Cockpit Plus with iDrive 7, including a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, navigation, and smartphone integration. The system offered a customizable experience with options for a larger 12.3-inch screen and cloud-based navigation. The X3 included a standard 12-speaker sound system, with an optional Harman Kardon system for enhanced audio. Additional tech options included a Convenience Package and a Premium Package, offering features like a panoramic sunroof and gesture control.
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 received a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features included Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and more. Higher trims offered additional features like blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree camera system.
The 2022 BMW X3 earned a five-star crash safety rating from the NHTSA. It included standard safety features like adaptive LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, and active blind-spot monitoring. Optional packages added features like parking assistance and a 360-degree camera view, enhancing the X3's safety offerings.
