Confusingly, for 2021, the Prius lineup offered a 2020 Edition. Toyota built just 2,020 examples to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first Prius sold in the U.S. market. It has blacked-out trim, black 17-inch wheels, a body-color rear spoiler, and comes in Supersonic Red or new Wind Chill paint colors.

Additionally, Toyota improved the 2021 Prius’s driving-assistance systems by making Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across the board. Android Auto is also standard (joining Apple CarPlay), except for the unique infotainment system in the Prius Limited.

The 2021 Toyota Prius retained its iconic boomerang-shaped hood and roofline, a design choice that had been part of its identity for over 15 years. Despite advancements in aerodynamic vehicle design, the Prius continued to sport this distinctive look, which was not universally praised. The interior was equally unconventional, featuring a strip of displays mounted in the center of the dashboard, a toggle lever for transmission controls, and a narrow center console. Gloss-black trim, while stylish, was a magnet for dust and fingerprints. The Prius was available in multiple trims, including L Eco, LE, XLE, 2020 Edition, and Limited, with an optional AWD-e system for the LE and XLE trims. Prices ranged from $24,525 to $32,650, with our test vehicle costing $31,295. In contrast, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI, despite claims of all-new body panels, looked quite similar to its predecessor. The new GTI was longer and lower, maintaining a 103.6-inch wheelbase, which contributed to its stable yet nimble silhouette. The front end featured a subtle honeycomb-patterned air intake and a signature red accent line running between the LED headlights. Optional features like a light bar added drama to the front end, especially at night. The GTI came with standard LED fog lights and red brake calipers, with wheel sizes varying by trim. The color palette included traditional shades like silver, black, and white, along with more vibrant options like Atlantic Blue Metallic and Kings Red Metallic. The top-tier Autobahn trim even offered a unique Pomelo Yellow Metallic option.

The 2021 Toyota Prius was all about fuel efficiency, with the L Eco version achieving an impressive 56 mpg in combined driving, according to the EPA. Other front-drive models managed 52 mpg, while AWD-e versions achieved 49 mpg. Our test vehicle averaged 47.5 mpg, slightly below EPA estimates. The Prius featured a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 53-kilowatt electric motor, producing a total of 121 horsepower. While this wasn't much for a 3,020-pound car, the near-instantaneous 120 pound-feet of torque from the electric motor made it feel lively off the line. The Prius offered Eco, Normal, and Power driving modes, along with an EV Mode for electric-only driving at speeds under 25 mph. The TNGA platform provided a lower center of gravity, making the Prius surprisingly agile on curvy roads, though it wasn't exactly a thrill to drive. The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI, on the other hand, was a performance powerhouse. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produced 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, making it a joy to drive on curvy mountain roads. The engine reached peak horsepower at 5,000 rpm, with torque available from a low 1,750 rpm. The GTI offered a choice between a six-speed manual transmission and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) with paddle shifters. The EPA estimated its fuel economy at 24 mpg city, 34 highway, and 28 combined for the manual, with a slight uptick for the automatic. The GTI's retuned suspension, electronic torque-sensing limited-slip differential, and various drive modes made it a formidable performer. The top-tier Autobahn trim even featured a DCC adaptive damping system capable of 200 adjustments per second.

The 2021 Toyota Prius offered more interior space than one might expect, comfortably seating up to five people. Our test vehicle featured an eight-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. However, the low seating position made entry and exit somewhat challenging. The rear seats provided adequate foot room, legroom, and headroom but lacked air-conditioning vents. Cargo space varied by trim, ranging from 24.6 to 27.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 47.9 to 50.7 cubic feet with the seats folded down. The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI excelled in both performance and practicality. It offered 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 34.5 cubic feet with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats down. The driver-centric interior featured a center stack angled toward the driver and a unique “light and sight” panel for adjusting headlights and defogging settings. Rear legroom was surprisingly generous, making the GTI a viable option for families.

The 2021 Toyota Prius came with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that included Bluetooth, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI featured IQ.Drive, which included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, and more. However, IQ.Drive was only available on automatic models. All trims came with Park Distance Control, and the Autobahn trim added Park Assist. Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS had crash-tested the 2022 GTI at the time of writing.
