2020 Nissan Murano Reviews Summary

The 2020 Nissan Murano continues to offer buyers an upmarket alternative to the Nissan Rogue. The highlights of the Murano are numerous, but it also faces an uphill battle as its rapidly-aging generation faces new competition from models specifically designed for empty nesters like the Murano is.

2021 Honda CR-V Reviews Summary

Even in a grim year, Honda is selling a staggering number of CR-Vs. The CR-V is the best-selling Honda by far. It’s also the second best-selling compact SUV, just behind the Toyota RAV4. And it's the fifth best-selling vehicle in the U.S., and if you take out all the commercial sales of full-size pickups it’s one of the two best-selling vehicles year in and year out.

So it’s hard to argue against the CR-V formula. Honda’s been at this almost as long as crossovers have been a thing, launching the CR-V in 1997—a year after the RAV4 debuted.

The funny thing is, aside from sales volume, there’s only one thing the CR-V particularly excels at. Aesthetics are subjective, but it would be hard to argue the CR-V is the best looking vehicle in its class. It’s not the cheapest. It’s not the best equipped, especially at the middle to lower trim levels. It’s not the fastest, nor is it the quietest, or the most fuel efficient. It’s not even the most reliable, showing up nowhere in J.D. Power's Most Reliable list.

So what makes it so appealing to American consumers? Let’s see if we can figure that out.

2020 Nissan Murano

6/10

2021 Honda CR-V

6/10

The 2020 Nissan Murano, while updated in 2019 with a refreshed grille, redesigned LED headlights and taillights, and new wheel designs, retained a design that was attractive but not particularly modern. As newer models like the Nissan Pathfinder and Armada debuted, the Murano's styling began to feel dated. Available in S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, the Murano offered more standard features in midrange and higher trims, such as heated mirrors and adaptive cruise control in the SV, and traffic-sign recognition in the SL. The Platinum trim featured a new leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Murano's interior, especially in the Platinum grade, boasted premium materials but was hampered by dated design elements from its 2014 origins. Despite this, it maintained an upscale feel compared to the 2021 Nissan Rogue, with intuitive controls and a sensible layout.

The 2021 Honda CR-V, on the other hand, had a design that blended in with the competitive crossover market, with few distinguishing features. Its styling was similar to other compact crossovers, with a few unique details like the grille opening and chromed plastic features. The CR-V was available in eight colors, though many were shades of gray, black, or white, with more vibrant options limited to higher trims. The interior offered black, gray, and ivory cloth or leather, with wood panels and chrome in higher trims for a more upscale look. The CR-V's seats had a modern, angular design, and while it wasn't a standout in terms of looks, it provided a functional and comfortable environment for passengers.

Performance

2020 Nissan Murano

7/10

2021 Honda CR-V

6/10

The 2020 Nissan Murano was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. While not the quickest, it performed well on highways, aided by a quiet continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Murano achieved an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. It came standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available. The Murano's suspension provided a comfortable ride, though it exhibited body lean in corners. It had a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, positioning it as a comfortable cruiser rather than a sporty SUV.

The 2021 Honda CR-V featured a 190-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine across all trims, with a 0-60 mph time of about 7.8 seconds. Its CVT provided smooth acceleration, though it lacked engagement compared to competitors with conventional transmissions. The CR-V offered front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive as an option. Its suspension setup, common in the class, provided decent handling and ride quality. The CR-V's performance was steady and predictable, making it a reliable choice for everyday driving.

Form and function

2020 Nissan Murano

8/10

2021 Honda CR-V

8/10

The 2020 Nissan Murano was known for its Zero Gravity seats, providing exceptional comfort for long journeys. It offered more headroom than the Lexus RX and excelled in shoulder room, with 3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 2021 Rogue. The Murano's cargo space was up to 32.1 cubic feet with the second row upright and 67.0 cubic feet with it folded, slightly less than the class average. It featured a low cargo floor and easy-to-fold rear seats, enhancing usability. Standard features included dual-zone climate control and keyless entry, with options for leather seating and a panoramic moonroof. However, the center console lacked practical storage for smartphones.

The 2021 Honda CR-V prioritized functionality, with 102.9 cubic feet of passenger volume and 75.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. It offered various tailgate options, including a hands-free version on the Touring trim. Roof rails were standard only on the top trim. The CR-V's interior was designed for comfort and practicality, accommodating five passengers and their gear effectively.

The 2020 Nissan Murano featured an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB ports, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker audio system. Upgrades included an 11-speaker Bose system and navigation. The Murano Platinum offered NissanConnect Services, similar to GM's OnStar, with remote functionalities. Despite being behind competitors in tech, the Murano provided essential features for its target audience.

The 2021 Honda CR-V's base LX trim had a 5-inch screen, while other trims featured a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The audio system varied by trim, with the Touring offering a 300-watt system with navigation. Charging ports were abundant, with a wireless charger on the Touring trim. The CR-V's tech offerings were competitive, providing essential connectivity and entertainment features.
